How do you tell the difference between stomach flu and food poisioning?
I'm sick, it started yesterday morning, I'm nauseous and have been running to the bathroom with diarrhoea. I also have joint pain, hot and cold flashes and a headache. I thought I was feeling better today, that was until I ate something. I'm just a little more worried than I normally would be for two reasons, I don't want DS to get this and I'm pregnant and think that I should probably be eating, but I just can't. I've been trying to drink water, but it's not easy. As I haven't been out much and I don't think I've come into contact with anyone who has had the stomach flu, how do I know that it's the flu? I've read that a lot of people mistake mild food poisioning for the flu. Oh I so don't want DS to get this, he's so little and it's so awful.
Heaven, I have been battling the same thing since yesterday afternoon ...I was up all night running to the bathroom!! Joint pain, pounding headache, hot...cold...I am guessing its the flu. I just had some oyster crackers and ginger ale and the yucky feeling in my stomach has seemed to go away abit. Hope your feeling better because I felt awful all night!
Usually, with the flu, you have a feaver, and with food poisoning, you don't. I hope that you both feel better real soon.
Hey I was like that last night my knees were hurting somethigna wful all day yesterday. Nothing stayed in my stomach for longer than a few hours and my head was killing me. I feel better today other than the headache and I am really tired. It must be something going around.
Try drinking some gatorade or something to keep yourself hydrated and if you have too many episodes of the diarrhea I would call your doctor, because that is not good to have while you are pregnant. Hopefully it will pass soon. The girls and I have been stuffy and coughing this week, it has drained us. Get plenty of rest, you need it. There is a good survey to look at seeign if you have a cold or the flu...I will try to find it for you... here it is
Yeah I guess it is probably the flu. I'll just wash my hands until my skin comes off. KATHY OYSTER CRACKERS!!! Oh man that sounds awful, I'm sorry!
Food poisoning---I have had it twice Symptoms were: The worst cramping in my life--worse than labor! Constant throwing up and diarrhea. It was difficult to do both. I literally sat on toilet with a bucket in my arms. No fever. Body aches because it exhausts you being so sick. Because you have hot/cold I think it has to be a flu or bug not food poisoning. I hope you feel better soon! Yvonne
We had food poisioning once and it was just the vomiting and diareah, stomach cramps etc. not chills or anything like that. I would say you have the flu based on my experience with food posioning. We had it so bad we ended up in the ER, so we had it pretty severe and needed antibiotics to get over it.
Sounds more like the flu to me. The 3 times I've had food poisoning, my only problem was the tummy--working at both ends. I could also pinpoint where the food poisoning came from. The vomitting is fearous. Twice was just mild reaction that only lasted a day, but the third sent me to the hospital in critical condition (due to dehydration). Regardless of flu or poisoning, you need to drink something (esp gateraide or the like) even if you throw it up again. It doesn't take much to keep you hydrated if you continue to drink. Something of what you take in will be absorbed before you toss the rest up. I learned this the hard way. If you notice yourself starting to "slip away," call 911 and get help. Once dehyrdation starts (and you can literally feel yourself drifting away) it doesn't take long for it to win. For me, I was sick at 5am and in the hospital w/ blue lips and no pulse by 8am. You need to be esp careful since you are pregnant. Not telling you this to scare you, just to inform you. If you drink, though, you are far less likely to have this happen to you. Hope you feel better quickly. And this goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway. CALL YOUR OB
