Did we ruin this medicine?
My daughter has been pretty sick and we received an antibiotic for her to take. It is different than the usual pink antibiotic we usually get. I didn't think to refrigerate it. We just had it on the counter with a few other meds she is on. I was reading on the bottle tonight and it says "keep refrigerated". They didn't tell us this at the hospital. And, she was admitted and stayed there for 2 days with these meds sitting on her side table. Is it still effective? Do we need to get new meds?
How long was it sitting out? My mom watched Katelyn one night and ddin't put the med in the fridge (it was out for like overnight) I called the pharmacy and they said it was fine, best bet would be to talk to your pharmacy or I think a mom on here works or worked at a pharmacy maybe she can help..
We ruined it Just called the pharmacy. It's been out since Tuesday evening. On our way to get a refill. Thanks.
I would have called the pharmacy, too.
Most times, insurance companies won't cover the cost of another prescription until the time period for the current one has expired. Did you have to pay for it out of pocket? Unfortunately, that's a lesson hard learned. Many kids' meds need to be refrigerated, hopefully this will remind everyone to check the bottles/labels when they get meds for their kids. I'm surprised no one at the pharmacy mentioned it to you when you picked in up the first time. At the pharmacies in my area, they always tell you things like that about the meds you pick up.
BTW, how is DD today??
We did this once with an antibiotic when DD was little - when I called the pharmacy, I was told that the med. was fine, that the refrigeration would just make it taste better.....I think it was Augmentin or Suprax.....DD lived on those for the first 2 years of her life! I hope he was right. (LOL, she's 14 now, so I guess it didn't do any lasting damage ;)
Sorry, this post got buried and I didn't realize anyone else had responded. My dd is doing much much better. She is back at school this week. We got the original prescription from the ER. The ER doctor mixed it for us and gave it to us. Then, they decided to admit dd. So, we still had the prescription in hand. They never gave us any refrigeration instructions. I should have known, lol. Our insurance DID cover the 2nd bottle of medicine. Only because we received the first bottle in the ER and it went under our general "ER VISIT" part of the plan and not our "PRESCRIPTION" part of the plan. When we originally talked to the pharmacist about this he did warn us that our insurance may not pay for it and it would be expensive if they didn't. But, thank goodness it all worked out. We only ended up paying $1.30 for the second bottle. DD is much better now, and they never figured out what was wrong with her. She had elevated white blood count and a high fever. It went on for about a week. Just a mystery. BTW, cybermommyx4, it was Augmentin that we ruined. And, my dd hated the taste of it. It smelled pretty good to me, but I guess it didn't taste to well, lol. The pharmacist said that the unrefrigerated meds wouldn't HURT her any, but they wouldn't be effective. So, we had been making her take nasty tasting medicing for no real reason, lol. Poor girl!
Sorry! This is the first I've seen of the post. Tuesday to Friday out of the fridge. I would have been concerned out continuing to use it, too. Better safe than sorry. At room temp about 24 hours is as long as I'd feel comfortable using it unrefrigerated. BTW, I'm probably the pharmacist that was mentioned above.
