So Cool! (baking discovery)
Some know I'm eating low carb right now. Well one thing I like to snack on is bacon. Problem is, my boys love it, too! So yesterday I made a whole package at once and stuck a bunch in the fridge. There were 20 slices in the pack. The boys got ahold of it and it was GONE this morning. I really don't like to cook bacon because it's SO messy! I made it on the Foreman grill and grease was everywhere! So today I decided to try baking it because I'd read I could. It worked GREAT!!! I used my broiler pan and it held half the pack. I took it out when it was done, now I'm baking lunch (fish for me, chicken nuggets and fries for the kids) and when it's done I'll put the other half in. My whole house doesn't stink of bacon and there's not grease all over my counter and floor. It turned out really well, too! Okay, so for those of you that have been doing this for years, just ignore me. I'm just thrilled at how well it worked. Just wanted to share.
You baked it or broiled it? What temp and how long? that sounds like a great idea!
I baked bacon for the first time and felt the same way! I even lined the bottom of the broiler pan with foil to make it that much easier. Bacon is a hassle to clean up after.
See I actually prefer to make my bacon on the forman bcz i used to broil it but then it nearly caught the oven on fire! So definately use caution!
Okay, please bear with me. What is a 'broiler pan'? No, I don't cook.
A broiler pan is actually two pieces. The top part has slots or holes for the grease to drop through, and a lower pan to catch the grease that falls. I bake meatballs, when I have spaghetti. 375 for 20 minutes! The original recipe had you cooking the meatballs in hot oil. Ugh. It's so much easier to throw them in the oven. /image{broiler pan}
d'oh! Let me try again!
We use an electric skillet to cook bacon and it seems to do the trick for us. I tried microwaving it once...I do not recommend that! Chewy! Ewww. I might have to try baking it.
I baked it at 400* for about 15 minutes (few minutes less for the second batch because the oven was already hot). It doesn't curl like it does when you fry it, and it's not chewy. I didn't broil it, although I've read you can, but it said you have to watch for "flare ups", aka, it catches fire! lol I almost caught some hamburgers on fire once while broiling them.
Hey, I have one of those!!! So excited!! But, I like soft, chewy bacon...does baking it make it crisp? I don't care for crisp...
Great! can't wait to try it!
I think if you just cooked it a few minutes less it would be more chewy. Mine wasn't too crisp. The outside pieces were more crispy. Down side--I still smell like bacon! lol Don't you hate when you cook something and smell like it for the rest of the day???
I dont knwo if it will fwork for bacon, but when i'm frying fish so me and my whole house doenst' smell like it long as the fish as been eatign and disposed of outdoors. Beofre frying ,i oplace a smal pot of water on the sotve just whenit begings to boil I drop in some Cinnamon, and by the time I'm ready to start fryign the aroma has filed my apartment and when anyone comes in they can't tell that i'm fryign fish because they smell the Cinnamon. It may be too much of a hassle jsut for a pack of bacon but if your willing to take the time to do this , then I say give it a try.
I must be the only one, but I put mine in the microwave. So easy to clen up, and sooooo yummy.
I bake my bacon too. It is so much easier, we make our bacon chewy in the oven... we just don't let it be in there long.
Thanx for the tip, Letishe. I'll have to give it a try. Baking it didn't smell the whole house up like doing it in my Foreman grill did yesterday. The smell is in my hair and on my clothes right now. Oh well. I'll smell yummy! lol
I love bacon but always hated frying it. So I use the Tyson's fully cooked bacon that you just have to microwave. It is excellent!!! You can cook it how you like, crispy or chewy. And it tastes just like you just finished frying it, without the grease. We eat bacon all the time now.
We've never fried anything - I've always baked the bacon by putting the slices on a rack, which was placed on a cookie sheet. That way, the grease dripped off into the pan.
I cook ine in the microwave on a special dish for this purpose. It separates the bacon from the drippings. Depending on how long it is cooked it can be chewy or crisp. I never have tried to bake it but I do bake meatballs like Bea. Soooo much easier, faster and healthier.
Letishe, That tip about boiling water with cinnamon works for liquid extract, too! I have done it with vanilla, almond, and mint extracts (at different times) and it makes the house smell great! Personally, tho I LOVE the smell of bacon! Just like breakfast is my favorite meal of the day! I fry my bacon on a griddle I bought at Meijers, and all the grease runs off into the little grease tray underneath, so the bacon doesn't sit in grease while it's frying. It only splatters on the counter around the griddle a little. Except one time I forgot to put the grease tray in, and the grease went on the counter!
Oscar Meyer fully cooked bacon is a LIFESAVER in our house (especially when we have "breakfast for dinner" nights) You just put it on a cookie sheet in the oven for 7 minutes and it's DONE. Best of all, since you buy it cooked, there is no *yucky fat part* that the kids won't eat, and it is very crisp and almost chewy the way we do it. Yummy
