Extended day kindergarten
For those of you who send your child to extended day kindergarten, do your schools charge for it and if you don't mind answering, how much do they charge? We are having a major budget overhaul in my school district and they've raised tuition for this program effective next year. Regular half day kindergarten is free, it's just the extended day they are charging - $3500 per child.
When my oldest was in K, we had to pay for extended day and it was $200 a month. It was free all day by the time my daughter was in K.
Our public schools have K going from 8:15am to 2:45pm and has for years. I wish we still had half day K because it just seems like the day is a little long for a 5yo.
In one of the districts by us, they charge for full day Kindergarten. I read about it in the paper. I want to say that it was under $100.00 a month. I don't remember the exact amount. $3,500 sounds high! I pay a lot less then that for the private school my ds attends.
thanks! When I worked in ext day I think the tuition was around $200 per month...this new amount just seems really high to me, but I never had my dks in it so I wasn't sure.
I have no idea, since I don't have kindergarteners! I only looked at the middle school and high school fees last summer.
Full day is free here in the public schools. Thats all they offer in the public schools is full day. We have 1/2 day in the private schools here. I am looking at a private school for Blake that offers 1/2 day K and it will cost a little over $200 a month just for the 1/2 day.
I'm a k teacher and we have extended day called 'supplemental'. It is not available in our corp. for anyone - only students recommended by the K teacher who need additional experiences and reinforcement. It is not for remediation or low students. As a matter of fact, for our corp., 'low' students are not eligible for extended day. It does not cost the parents anything and transportation and lunch is provided, just as it is for our regular K. The classes are small, maybe 10-12 students, with paraprofessionals as well. $3500 per child I can't believe that! We can't offer it to everyone, so I guess that's how we get around the charging through teacher selection only. (I'm in IN)
Colette, I thought it was just me!!! My DH laughed at me when I read in our community newspaper that the price for kindergarten was going UP TO $2,297 a year!!!! I ranted for an hour as to "since when did you have to pay for public school"!!!! I guess kindergarten isn't the same!
They just voted in our town to change Kindergarten from a half day to a full day program. No one will have to pay for it up front-but I will bet our taxes will be going up again! I think $3500 per child sounds really high-it sounds like they want to discourage parents from keeping their kids in the program all day?
They just started an all day pre-K program in our town this yr at 3 of the elementary schools (keep in mind we have about 15 elem. schools.) Kids from families who wouldnt be able to afford preschool can get their kids placed in these classes--so that they are not behind the other kids when they start K... We already have a *Headstart Preschool* for these kids too. I guess they ran out of room or something? The rest of us have to pay for preschool. I wish it was free too.
