School insurance

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive February 2005: School insurance
By Annie2 on Wednesday, February 2, 2005 - 08:26 pm:

At the beginning of each school year my kids have always brought home a school insurance policy form. It can be taken out for the child while in school hours or for 24 hour coverage...mainly against injury, not illness.

Has anyone purchased this type of policy? I live in FL but I'm sure it is nationwide.

Also, if a child is injured at school, would the school's insurance cover the medical costs?

I have a few questions from anyone BTDT. THANKS! :)

We get that every year and I just pitch it. That is a good question about if your child were to get hurt at school, like on recess or gym or something, would the schools insurance pay for it or would your regular medical insurance pay...never thought about that before.

I know this one firsthand unfortunately.

My daughter broke her leg while on a field trip to the park at the end of school last year. Didn't realize it for a couple of weeks, not till school was out. So I went and spoke with the asst. principal, and had to complete some forms.

Here's the deal. We had to go to the doctor and let our insurance cover all they would cover, and then complete a form, all within so much time and submit it to their insurance company to pay the difference so I would not have to pay out of pocket.

I did as was told. Sent in my insurance statements stating what they paid and what I was responsible for. I was sent something several months later from the school's insurance that stated what I had sent was insufficient. I needed itemized billing from each place she had been stating how much my insurance paid on each billed item, and how much I owed.

I tried getting this from everyone, hospital, company that reads x-rays, regular ped., ortho. dr.

Needless to say, I had a very difficult time getting all that I needed from the different places. And, the school's insurance never contacted me again, and never paid a dime.

At the time, I was having major health problems and just didn't feel up to the runaround so it just didn't get done.

It's a joke. I feel that my insurance should not have been liable for this because the school has insurance that covers for accidents that happen at school. They make it such a hassle to you so that you don't use their insurance and they save money. The only way they pay initially is if the student doesn't have personal insurance.

Keep in mind, this was not the additional insurance that you have to pay for. This is the insurance that the school is required to have that covers all students. I see no point in purchasing extra insurance.

We've never bought school insurance, and the times that our children were injured in school sports/activities, the school policy covered what our insurance did not.

Accident insurance is generally a waste of money - as you can see from the posts above. Most "specialized" insurance, such as accident insurance, cancer insurance, and stuff like that is generally a waste of money from what I've read. The only exceptions would be trip insurance if you are planning an expensive vacation with cancellation penalties (like a cruise), and I am beginning to think that a good "nursing home" policy is probably a good idea if one can afford it.

DH's dad had nursing home insurance and intensive care insurance. It sure helped with all the bills, after he died.

I'd also be concerned in a case where the school had liability for a child's injury. If the child were insured by the school, that might - and I don't know if this is true - prevent the parents from bringing an action on the child's behalf.

Thanks everyone. I purchased the school insurance for $34. for 24 hour coverage against injury. My ds broke his arm, at school, during recess.
The hospital told me that they will send me a bill, then I can submit a claim to the insurance company. When I get the bill, I'll bring it into the school and let them know the amount of it, then keep them posted on what I get in return.
The school's secretary and nurse know I am trying to use the insurance and may have to make a claim on the school's insurance so I am not out of pocket any money.
Generally I hate dealing with insurance companies. We had private insurance a couple of years ago when dd broke her arm. I'll still paying on that bill!
I'll keep you all posted. Thanks again :)

Our schools won't cover injuries sustained on the school grounds.
When I was growing up my parents always purchased the school insurance because we didn't have other insurance.
We have insurance through my husbands work, so we don't need the special school insurance.
Good luck with the situation with your ds's arm!

We're never purchased it, either. With dh being military, we don't need it. I have heard of school's insurance not covering anything outside the building (like the playground). I don't think that's right, though. Their insurance should cover anything on their grounds. jmho

I will keep you all posted on the return. I know ALL of us have seen these forms at each new school year.

My ds's injury is exactly what this insurance SHOULD cover FULLY.

IF this insurance does NOT cover him fully, I am making a claim with the school's insurance. There was no neglience(puddle on floor, no supervision, etc.); just a plain accident.

I really hope we don't get screwed. Sorry for the "bad" word but it may fit here. :)
