Unreal renovation

Hi everyone
I decided that I wanted to put some tiles around my bathtub, well we had to take off the old tub surround, no problem .......... one would think. we took that off drywall underneath is covered in mold, so off it came and what did we find, absolutley no insulation or poly nothing but the outside shingles that are on the outside of the house. This answered the cold toilet seat question in the winter months. so now we have it all stripped down, 2 studs are really moldy too, so they are being replaced, and we are also taking out the tub to make sure their is nothing rotten under neath it, oh talk about opening up a can of worms........ the worst part is, if that is not insulated then it is highly unlikley that any of the other walls are insulated. I am going to pull down the kids bedroom wall and get that done soon as the bathroom is done. dh's cousin is here and is doing the job for us, he is awesome at renovations, so I kind of talked him into it, I was laughing and saying rick I just wanted to put up theses pretty tiles I have!!!

That is typical. Often when houses are built, contractors cut so many corners and use such a cheap grade of materials, and you don't discover it until something breaks or needs replacement.

It's not at all unusual for drywall in bathrooms to be ruined and moldy or mildewed because of the moisture in there. What a job you have cut out for you though! We need to do some serious upgrading in our house - bathrooms and kitchen - and I really dread the bathroom part for just that reason.

Good luck!

Well rick is still hard at it in their, I went and got that special board to put around the tub for moisture, it is 20 a sheet, and I bought three, but looks like we need one more, got the mastic, and grout for the tiles, all in total so far 170.00 , and I say so far, thier will most likley be more things we need. I will tell you how it all ends up.

That happened to us too Mrse.It was gross. The whole area that the tub unit covered was covered with black mold ,which my ds is very allergic to !
It was quite the job.
We actually used an outhouse for 2 weeks in the summer so my DH could put the ceramic tile in !
It looks great now.
It just took a long time to finish.

Instead of pulling down walls, see if you can do that thing where they cut a small hole and blow in the insulation.
