Religeous Moms, and those with kids....

Disclaimer: This is NOT mean't for debate!

DH and I went to the Chaplain today to schedule our marriage enrichment retreat for next month (Woo-Hoo!). Anyways, we found out the chaplain is a Christian Hip Hop, Rap "whatever you call it" singer. I myself don't like that music but he showed us a sample of what he does. One word: AMAZING!!! We actually walked away buying 2 cds that are non profit and go to support the ministry. Some of the lyrics had me really amazed and some almost teary eyed. One cd is basically his life and coming to the Lord and going from a street kid on the streets of L.A. to a Chaplain in the Navy. He also had another cd that targets worldly problems:
Abortion
Gay Marriage
Sexual "problems" in the church with the pastors, priests, bishops etc...
Popular rap music and how it degrades society as a whole

.... everything you can think of. I love it! :) If you want, he has a website that has lyric samples that you can listen to or read to see what i'm talking about. If you have kids who seem to be attracted to the "beat" of rap music, this may be good for them! BTW- i'm not trying to endorse this or anything. I'm just truly amazed at his work. I've never had christian music appeal to me in such a way, and its his words, not even the music!

We know a Christian Rap singer named Bobby Sanders. He's been to our church a couple times and Robin loves his music! He's also a really great guy who played basketball with the kids and spent 25 minutes talking to Robin one day. He's a pastor, too. I've never really like rap, but I will listen to Bobby's cd. I think this is a new thing, but if it gets kids to listed to lyrics that aren't about sex, drugs and other questionable things, I think it's great. Have fun at your seminar! :)

Pamt would probably be interested in this thread. Her DH is a youth minister, and I remember her posting previously about the type of music her kids listen too. Keep this bumped to the top so she will see it.

My only objection to most rap is the content (though I don't think much of it as "music", either - but then, I didn't much care for Elvis either). If the content is good, then by all means. I am going to visit the site to see if it might be appropriate for the youth group in my church.
(See, Melissa, we can occasionally agree.)

How nice to be able to listen to the beat of rap without lyrics about sleeping around, beating up your woman, etc. I'm like Ginny - it's the content of some rap that bothers me, and actually that can apply to a lot of other types of music, as well.

I'm no prude, but I'm definitely more aware of the world around me now that I'm a mom.

Thanks Karen..I see it :). I personally don't like rap and my boys "sort of" do, but we are trying to channel their interests other ways while we still have some influence. Toby Mac is a very popular Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) rapper. My boys have recently gotten very into Reliant K and Switchfoot and as a result I have too. They are awesome---great music and fun lyrics in a punk/rock with a little bit of ska. Fun stuff. I have very diverse music tastes, but listen to CCM most often. Sara Groves, Nichole Nordeman, Chris Rice, Steven Curtis Chapman, Bebo Norman, Passion are among my favorites. I love the music (lots of acoustic guitar...Chris Rice is very James Taylor-like), but the lyrics are phenomenol!! You can find ANYTHING in CCM that musically compares to secular music---from rap to hard rock to easy listening to country. And it's good quality stuff these days with skilled musicians.

Our youth are really big into anything by Passion, One Day, David Crowder Band, Reliant K, Switchfoot, and Matt Redman (whom I also love). I'm sure a few like rap, heavy metal, and alternative CCM, but most have tastes very similar to mine. :)
