Shelf life of processed cheese
I was unloading groceries and my DS woke up...had to feed him of course. So, after that, I go back to unload more groceries and apparently I forgot to put the Kraft processed cheese slices in the fridge. We got them at our local wholesale place so they were pretty expensive. Well, apparently DH came home 6 hrs later and found them...and then threw them away since he figured they had been out for a few hours. Would you have thrown them away?
I know hard cheeses need to be refridgerated something like 6 out of 24 hours. They actually have more flavor after setting out for about 20 minutes. I don't know about processed cheese, though. After 6 hours I may have thrown them away, too. It's a bummer, I know. About 6 months ago, when the weather was a LOT warmer than now, I told the boys to put some groceries away in the garage where our spare fridge is. Well they just sat the whole plastic bag on the floor in front of the fridge. I found it two days later. Yuck!
6 hours..I probably would have thrown it out too. I would only let it sit out an hour tops then I would say toss it. Cat, that is gross, I think I would have been a little upset.
I think you are probably fine at 6 hours - it is so processed, pasteurized, etc. - depending on whether it is from the deli or the plastic wrapped stuff (name brand), but throwing it out is safer. I will ask my former chef son what his opinion might be.
I did this, but overnight in the trunk. I called the company and asked. I was told it should be safe but "real cheese" like cheddar to toss out. But they also said better safe than sorry and to toss it. I kept mine and ate it all with no problems.
Velveeta isn't kept refrigerated in the store...I know it's sealed, but still. You couldn't do that with "real" cheese.
I think it would have been fine. Like Michelle said, Velveeta is processed cheese and is not refrigerated. I would have thrown real cheese out, but kept the processed stuff.
Thanks...I kept the cheese, and yes, it's the individually wrapped slices of american cheese. I don't think he'll notice...sssshhhhhh....
Heck even *real* cheese is OK. I sometimes buy 10 *year* old cheddar. It is super sharp and super yummy. If it can handle being older than 2 of my kids I think it can handle being out of the fridge for a while. Processed stuff I would eat as long as it hasnt gotten all melty. If it is as cold there as it is here, outside is colder than my fridge anyway.
