Trying out our version of the atkins diet

Moms View Message Board: Let's Get Fit! (Weight Loss Support Group): Trying out our version of the atkins diet
By Mrse on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 - 10:23 am:

I say our version, because I am sure we are not following it to the letter. last night the girls and I went and bought a chicken, and vegetables, I bought dh some new potatoes, we had a chicken stir fry. Usually us girls would also have the potatoes and always a bun. Well it is not sticking with me, at 4 in the morning, I got cramps and was running to the washroom, and again this morning. My oldest dd says it is because we are not use to having straight vegetables. It is so hard to think of something to cook, when your basic meals in the past were always included either potatoes, rice, or pasta, and their is a big hole on our plate I have to figure out how to fill that hole now. My girlfriend is on the atkins diet and she lost alot of weight and is really small now. The girls and I have packed it on this summer so I am trying to get this diet going and get on an exercise program ( go for a walk or a do one of the tapes that we have) before school starts. Hopefully I will loose some weight, when I look at my arms I see my grandmothers arms! Is anyone one on this diet? or something similiar?

I am not on the low carb diet, but we cut simple carbs a long time ago. Try 2 veggies instead of one with dinner. If you need the texture of a starch, try mashed cauliflower - cook as you would mashed potatoes, drain it thoroughly though, otherwise it comes out watery.

It takes a few days for your body to get used to a "lower" carb diet. I'd suggest you SLOWLY reduce your carb intake over a one week period not just cold turkey.

The body can store about 2000 cal of carbs in your liver by combining it with water. When you cut out the carbs, the body uses these stores first and releases the water in the process.

I've been doing a "modified" Atkins for about 13 months. Gone from 249 to 185, waist from 43 to 34 without any significantly increased exercise. Highly recommended.

I suggest we move this thread to the Diet board.
