Group Goal?

Moms View Message Board: Let's Get Fit! (Weight Loss Support Group): Group Goal?
By Cat on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 09:44 am:

Who wants to set a group goal? Post how much weight you want to lose (reasonable amount!) and let's see how many "people" we can collectively lose! We can lose supermodels (average weight 105ish?) or regular people (150ish?). We'll decide together. Heck, we can even decide WHO we want to lose (am I hearing presidential candidates names???)! Okay. Here we go.

I want to lose 24 more lbs because I've already lost 6.
Total: 30lbs

By Brandy on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 - 01:27 pm:

I want to lose 65 pounds

By Kaye on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 07:57 am:

You can put me down for an initial 25.

By Insaneusmcwife on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 09:30 am:

70 for me.

By Cat on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 09:58 am:

We're up to 190lbs so far, and I know we have more!!! Who else??? :)

By Luvn29 on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 10:00 am:

As soon as I get a new scale so I can weigh, I'll let you know. At least 30, though, I'm sure!

By Tink on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 10:08 am:

Count me in for 50 lbs, please.:)

By Debbie on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 10:09 am:

15 lbs for me. I lost 3 lbs last week, which will give me a total of 18. I was at 160. I want to be 142.

By Cat on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 02:17 pm:

288 now :)

By Tink on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 06:27 pm:

We could lose a Biggest Loser contestant!:)

By Cat on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 09:05 pm:

ROFL, Cori! Hey, that's almost one of my brothers! (Shh--don't tell them I said that or they might sit on me! rofl!)

By Tink on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 09:47 pm:

Wow, you've got some BIG boys in your family. My dad is built like that. He's definitely let it run away from him and is probably close to 325 now. It can be hard to see someone you love looking like that.

By Cat on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 10:05 pm:

Cori, both my brothers are 6' tall and they're both probably close to 300lbs each. My oldest brother (B)carries it better--more evenly distributed while my other brother (R) carries most of his in his mid-section. The bad thing is my oldest brother has two boys that are going to be the same way. His wife is about 5'10" and I'd venture to say she's over 250lbs. Their oldest is 6'2" and about 225lbs (will be 17 next week) and their youngest (was 14 in Nov) is about 5'6" and weighs about 170lbs. Robin's 14 (in Oct) and only weighs about 105, and Randy--well little man is 12 (Aug) and weighs about 75lbs. Dh and I were both SO skinny growing up and even into our 20's. I gained most of my weight when I had kids and his has just gradually come on over the past 15 years.

Btw, my dad was a big man, too. He was built just like my brother, R. About 2 years before he died the doctor told him he needed knee surgery but he was 50lbs overweight. He never did get that surgery. :(

By Crystal915 on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 10:18 pm:

I've lost 6 and want to lose another 15 for a total loss of 21 pounds. Goal weight is 105.

By Cat on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 10:37 pm:

309!!! That's 3 super models!!! rofl

By Kaye on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 11:05 pm:

Cat as far as weight goes, it is truely hard to guess someones weight. I didn't post my numbers, only because it is depressing for me. However I am almost 250, and probably at 250 on a dr scale. But I wear a size 18 and can play 2 hours of hard tennis. I', 5'6. Hubby is 20 poiunds heavier at 6'1, but his is all around his middle and he looks much larger than I do. I did all the measurements for the national body challenge and my proportions are right where they are supposed to be, that made me feel better. Ultimately I want to lose down to 200, but really no lighter than 180, last time I weight that little I wore a size 10. But I am setting reasonable goals, 10% of body weight at a time!

By Tink on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 - 11:48 pm:

In the interest of full disclosure, and so Kaye didn't feel too alone, I'm 5'6" and I'm at 220 right now. I lost about 25lbs last spring and kept 15 of it off but I can run a 9 minute mile, do 50 jumping jacks without breathing hard and wear a size 14. I know I looked best at 130 (size 6) before kids but I think I'm being realistic in wanting to get near 150 (size 8, I think). Kaye, like you, I'm very well-proportioned and don't have any major problem area, except for being *ahem* well-endowed. Cat, like you, I was thin until I had kids and I just put on 30lbs after each pregnancy. I'm sure the antidepressants I was on didn't help but I also went from being quite active to staying at home all the time. All the women in my family have been obese at one point or another but my bio dad's family is apparently thin. Two of my kids got my dh's thin genes (he's 6'7" and weighs 180) but my youngest looks just like my sister who's been overweight since she was a preschooler. It will be interesting to see where her dks will fall since her fiance has a tendency to put on weight but stays very active to prevent it. My youngest is a great running buddy now and loves to go out with me so I hope I'm being a good role model for her since I think it will be a challenge for her.

Kaye,
What is your BMI? That is the big thing. Mine is currently 21.3, and at my goal weight will be a BMI of 18.6, which is the very lowest of the normal range. It's great that you are so active, I couldn't do 2 hours of intense activity like that, and muscle *does* weigh more than fat, but you want to make sure your BMI is in a good range. BTW, women should be between 18.5 and 24.9. 25-29.5 is overweight, and over 30 is obese.

By Kaye on Thursday, January 10, 2008 - 07:18 am:

You know Crystal, I don't truely know what my bmi is, only because online all the calculators and such do it based on height and weight. I wonder if my gym has one of those cute machines.

Based on the official numbers I should weigh 120. I haven't weighed that since middle school, I had a 24 inch waist in high school and wore a size 5 and weighed 150. I hated it, but boy I would now love to have that body back :)

I got fat when I married my husband. He is not a small man, his bad habits crept over to me, no more 4 hour tennis dates, we went to dinner and a movie a lot..LOL.

Oh and I am not in denial, I am very much overweight and probably close to obese in the grand scheme of things, but I am healthy so far. I know because in Nov I had 10k worth of tests run because of an allergic reaction to cortizone shots!

By Cat on Thursday, January 10, 2008 - 09:27 am:

Oh, I know weights can vary greatly based on looks. Most people have no clue I weigh over 150lbs. I wear a very comfortable size 10 and have a very athletic build so I hide it well. :) I do know my sil if very unhappy with her weight and is considering surgery. I also know my brothers have both tried to lose weight in the past and R did get down to about 250 for a while and was quite happy with himself. lol

By Debbie on Thursday, January 10, 2008 - 10:02 am:

Weight can be very deceiving. I have a friend that is very athletic. I think she has one of the best bodies around. She informed me the other day that at 5'6", she weighs 155 lbs. I would have never guessed. I will say, she is VERY tone, I don't think she has an ounce of fat on her.

By Longaboo on Thursday, January 10, 2008 - 10:20 am:

I just want to get back into my "fat" jeans! , that would be a dream come true. I started WW a week ago and so far doing very good staying in my points range. I want to lose 20 lbs and get back into those jeans. I have lost 5 lbs so far, and walked 2 miles in 30 min, 3 days in a row. This is the most I have "tried" in a long time. I want to be buff by summer haha

By Crystal915 on Friday, January 11, 2008 - 02:45 am:

Your BMI is calculated by just height and weight, it's not measuring how much of you is fat, just your body ••• index. It is the preferred standard by many health care professionals, so it's still important to know, along with body fat. Weight is not at all a big deal compared to those two, since muscle weighs more than fat.

By Kaye on Friday, January 11, 2008 - 08:13 am:

When a bmi only calculates height and weight, then it doesn't take into effect that muscle weighs more. I put in my high school numbers, where I didn't have fat and it shows me as overweight. That is part of what started my eating issues. I have never treated food right, it always has a lot of importance to me. Whether it is being careful of what I ate, not eating, or just loving it. In high school I almost died due to treating my body so bady with diets and fasting. I turned that around too much now.

but yes I am obese, no denial there, but my goal weight still has me at a 31, so tecnhically I will stay obese.

By Cat on Friday, January 11, 2008 - 08:55 am:

I think we're at 329lbs (adding Lisa's 20). Is that right? Did I miss anyone?

Based on my height and weight my BMI is 25.6--overweight. Maybe, but I'm really not fat and I do have a lot of muscle. I think there's got to be a more accurate way to measure, but probably not without special equipment.
