Does exercise cause acne?
Moms View Message Board: Let's Get Fit! (Weight Loss Support Group): Does exercise cause acne?
Ds just started school the day after Labor Day. So beginning the Sunday before Labor Day, I began walking the dog every morning (except for last Thursday when it rained and on the weekend.) I am up to 30 minutes per day. I go around the neighborhood encompassing about 4 blocks, including one not-so-steep hill and a cul-de-sac. So it has been about a week and a half and I have FOUR ZITS! I wash my face every day (sometimes twice a day) with a facial cleanser containing 2% salicylic acid. I even scrub extra hard on the trouble areas (my chin, nose, and just above my eyebrows.) I have three zits on my chin and one on my forehead. One on my chin is very painful. I don't know if it's hormones or the exercise. I am doing nothing else differently.
Lisa, I read something in a magazine that recommended washing your face after a workout so I guess it could happen. Maybe doing that would help?
Well, I always take a shower within an hour of my walk. I get it done first thing in the morning because I want to get all the sweating done first. Sometimes I take two showers a day, if I sweat a lot doing housework and such. I always scrub my face in the shower. Keeping my face clean helps with allergies, too.
I have found that I have to wash my face before I exercise, and then again right after I exercise. I have very oily skin, and still have breakouts(and I am almost 40). If I wait, even a little while, after I exercise, I will break out. So, I just have gotten in the habit of jumping in the shower as soon as I cool off a little. I will even break out on my back under the straps of my sports bra if I don't shower right away. Also, I never exercise with makeup on. It always amazes me when I see all the woman at the gym in full makeup. My face would be a wreck if I did that.
So, exercise quite literally gets all the "juices" flowing? Okay then, I guess I'll go stock up on facial cleanser!
I added a second cul-de-sac to my walk this morning and still did it in 30 minutes!
