Any advice?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Any advice?

Luke is a great baby, and generally a good sleeper. However, I can NOT get him to sleep in his crib. He will sleep on the couch, in anyone's arms, in the carseat, swing, etc. But he won't sleep in his crib. I feel like I have tried everything, the heartbeat sounds, music, the mobile, swaddling, nothing works.
I realize he is young and I still have time, but I just want him in his crib so that I can get some sleep. I can't sleep well with him in the bed with me, it just makes me nervous.
Any ideas?

Natalie LOVED the crib aquarium by Fisher Price if you don't have one. She loved the soothing music and the lights.

Also, have you tried the little mattress pads with sides on them? I'm not sure what they're called, but they kind of keep the baby in one place. Maybe the crib isn't offering him that closed-in feeling that the other things do. Maybe it just feels too big to him.

Don't if that will help, but good luck!

Can you put him buckled in his car seat and then place the car seat in the crib? My guys took turns some nights in the car seats and in the swing.Whatever works...so you both can sleep{{{HUGS}}}

I had a friend with a baby who never learned to sleep in her crib. They had an extra queen-sized mattress and just laid her on there. It was right on the floor, without a bedframe. She slept much better, there, even as a baby. I can't remember if they packed pillows around her, or what. I don't think she ever fell off. (She's a teenager now.)

The advice I was given was to put one of my shirts that I had worn for a day in the crib with the baby (I put it over the crib sheet like a second crib sheet). It was supposed to have the mommy smell on it and that was supposed to help. I tried it a few times and it seemed to help. My first would not sleep in his crib so I asked everyone and tried everything. Also, lavender scent is supposed to help lull them to sleep, or the sound of running water. There are nature cds out there, or the timex clocks have some of those options on it if you have one, or you can just run some water and make a tape.

White noise machines help and maybe you could put a warm heating pad on it before you put him down. Sometimes the change in temperature wakes them up.
We also used the incline sleeper and that really helped Connor. He had a real "booger-filled nose". Sometimes Connor would sleep the whole night in the swing too, stopping only to feed. We transferred him to the crib at 2 months so Scott and I could take turns sleeping in a different room with him so the other could sleep through the night. That helped a lot too.

I hope this helps...it's so hard on mommy at that age!! :( I remember it very vividly.

A heating pad was the trick that worked for us! Put the heating pad under the sheets, turn it on about 15 minutes before bed and turn it off when you put the baby in bed. Worked great for us!!

The first thing I thought of was that maybe he for some reason needs to sleep a little inclined. I think they have a wedge or something to put under the crib mattress to incline it a bit?

Or it could simple be that the crib is cold and more open and he likes the warmth and cuddlyness (is that a word?) of your arms and the swing and carseat.

Thanks everyone... I will probably end up trying all these ideas, they sound great!

My DD is two months now and still sleeps in this...

papasan

I tried everyting too. We have a basinet and crib, she would wake within minutes of being put down. Now she is sleeping at least 6 hours at night. The way I see it, we are both sleeping and we have plenty of time to get used to the crib. I try putting her on her back during the day to get used to sleeping in that position. good luck.

oops! I guess I should have told you what the picture is! (well I still have some interrupted sleep :) )

it is a baby papasan made by fisher price. it plays music and vibrates too! I want one for myself!

My dd slept in her bouncy seat that vibrated pretty often too. Once in a while I let her sleep in the swing. Anything to get some sleep!

That one looks so comfy!
