Zyrtec Singulair ???

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Zyrtec Singulair ???
By Mrsheidi on Friday, January 19, 2007 - 12:28 pm:

Connor is on Singulair but I don't think it helps much with his allergies. The doc gave him a 3 day prescription for Zyrtec to help with his recent bout of sickness.

Any experience with either one of these meds? Or, do you know of another one instead of Singulair?

My youngest ds takes Singulair. It really helps his asthma and his post nasal drip. But, he also has to take Allegra with. He has terrible allergies, that trigger his asthma. I was told by our pediatricain that Singulair either works great, or not at all. I think Trina said it did nothing for her dd.

He was on Zyrtec before, and it worked great for him. We had to switch to the Allegra because Zyrtec wasn't covered under our new insurance.
I have heard that some dks can get very hyper and out of control on Zyrtec. I think some moms on here posted about it. So, I would just keep an eye out for an behavior issues.

I was one of the moms with ta Zyrtec issue. It was more than just hyper. Randy seemed like a different child on the Zyrtec. He had no impulse control, was whiny, easily angered and very disobedient and defiant.
It came on suddenly and stopped suddenly as soon as I stoped the Zyrtec, which is how I was able to link the Zyrtec to the behavior. Singulair is awsome. I start Randy on it at the first sign of sniffles.
The doc just prescribed Atarax for Helen as she is having major sinus issues which are affecting her sleep. It dried her up in a day!
Good luck and I hope he's feeling better soon.

Bethany was on Zyrtec for 2 weeks last year. OMG, she became a monster child! I remember thinking, "What the heck is wrong with her?!" Then I remembered Ame's post about her son's experience. I asked our Allergy/Asthma specialist and he confirmed that it effects some kids that way. An immediate improvement once she stopped taking it.

Both kids take Claritin with no problems. Unfortunately, it's OTC so not covered by our insurance. I buy it at BJ's for much cheaper than I can get it in a regular store. I'm not sure what the age requirements are though. Connor may be too young.

I've used Claritin with Helen and I think she's younger than Conner. Ask the doc about the right dosage.

I just bought Claritin at the store. They have a toddler version so I hope it helps! :) Thanks for the heads up on the Zyrtec. Maybe the Benadryl or Claritin will help. He's on Singulair every day until our next allergy date.

I'm another mom with a child who experienced major problems while on Zyrtec. He had the same symptoms as Amecmom's son. Horrible stuff. We use Claritin now - some insurance programs do cover OTC medications so check with yours.

Both of my kids take both of these meds (and a bunch of others for asthma) with no problems. Zytrec makes them both a little drowsy, which is not a big deal because they take it right before they go to bed.

DD who is 6 now has been on Singulair and Zyrtec since she was about 20 months old. Does well with it. It's trial and error with the asthma meds until you find one that works. Best wishes.

Our oldest used Claritin for toddlers but at that time it wasnt available in the US so had to drive to Canada. We aren't on any meds now.
