Sonicare?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Sonicare?
By Cat on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 - 11:24 am:

Does anyone have one? The dentist recommended we get one for Robin and said it'd probably be about $80. I've looked online and there are so many different models! They start at about $40 and go up to about $140. I don't know which one to get him! I guess I should call the dentist's office and see. This kid's got 5 or 6 cavities and his gums were so swollen and tender the tech couldn't clean his teeth. He hates to brush! I don't know if it's behavioral or a sensory thing. Randy had 3 cavities, too. Both need to work on brushing and flossing. It'll take two visits each to get their fillings (maybe three for Robin) and cost about $300 AFTER insurance. Ugh. Then Robin has to go back in three months for another cleaning. They're hoping the swelling in the gums will go down by then. I guess if the sonicare works it'll save us some money on fillings. Why couldn't they have gotten MY teeth??? I've only had one real cavity. I've had about 4 little ones they said were cavities, but they didn't even numb me to clean them out and seal them. My mom's teeth are horrible. She breaks them biting carrots! *sigh* Another one of the joys...

Our dentist recommends the Oral B electric toothbrush made by Braun. I think it's cheaper than the Sonicare. DH and I share an electric one (with different brush heads) and the kids each have a battery powered version.

I have very weak teeth, it runs in most of my family and I had some bad habits in high school that further weakened my enamel. My dentist recommended getting a Sonicare too and I have the Essence 5500. (I can't get a link to work.) It has really helped with the issues I had with my gums and I like the timer and Quadpacer functions. Luckily, it looks like all of my dks got my DH's teeth so they won't need the help I've had to get.

Dh called from the BX a little while ago and they had three. He ended up getting Robin the Elite 7300 and a pack of replacement heads (the dentist wants Robin using the compact head). I told dh for the price of this toothbrush it'd better do some good. Both kids were lectured last night about brushing twice a day, EVERY day and flossing. I hope it helped. I've been lecturing them for years. But other than holding them down and forcing them, what's a mom of preteens/teens supposed to do??? I guess I could make Robin pay for the toothbrush...

We all have Sonicare here and we also use a water pic. We love the Sonicare and the timer helps in making the kids brush long enough. It is expensive but lasts much longer than regular toothbrushes. We replace the heads twice a year. Since we started using the Sonicare, we have noticed a big difference. Our dental hygentist has mentioned that the children's teeth are much better. They (knock on wood) have not had any cavities. We require them to brush after every meal. Once it became a habit, it no longer is an issue.

Just as a warning. My doc also reccommended the sonic care, it really does do a better job of cleaning your teeth (the timer doesn't hurt also). So I bought one after gum surgery, I HATED it. I have some sensory issues too, and I just couldn't handle the "sound" and the vibration. I bought an oral b later, it doesn't do as good as a job according to my dentist, but it is better than regular brushing. There is a "step up" thing you do, to get used to it.
