I was wondering if anyone has gestional diabetes and is there a diet plan they can help me with for keeping the sugar levels down. I am due Jan 29,2007 but I do not want to take insulin shots to keep it down, Thank You.

GI Diet

Excellent for controlling your sugar levels.

Good luck, talk to your doctor first before starting any diet.

I had GD during my first pregnancy. I had to do finger pricks 6x a day to check and chart my glucose levels, right before and 1 hr. after each meal. Not fun but I quickly learned to alternate fingers and got used to it. LOL! If possible, see a Diabetic Educator and a Dietician. I did, and they were both VERY helpful! I was put on a strict carbohydrate limited diet. (40 grams of carbs for breakfast, 30 for morning snack, 60 for lunch, 30 for afternoon snack and 60 for dinner) It was overwhelming counting carbs at first, but I had to log everything I ate so my doctor could monitor and compare with my sugar levels. In fact, we had to adjust my breakfast carbs because my levels were too high. We started at 60, but had to cut it to 40. Unfortunately, the strict diet alone wasn't enough for me. I had to inject insulin every morning. Again, scary at first, but not a big deal once getting over the initial shock. DS was born full term and weighed 7 lbs. 15 oz.. Very good, considering I had GD. Although not nearly as strict, I continued watching my carbs and thankfully, I didn't develop GD when pregnant with DD. I'm high risk for developing diabetes now, so I still need to watch my carb intake.

Drink lots of water and exercise whenever possible. (Yes, you can count keeping up with your current children! :)) Exercise helps to bring down glucose levels. You CAN do it!! {{{HUGS}}}

I had it, with my second pregnancy. I did need to do the fingerstick tests, but didn't need to do insulin.
