Potty training at night-when?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Potty training at night-when?
By Reds9298 on Tuesday, November 28, 2006 - 03:02 pm:

Natalie has been day potty trained since her right before her second birthday. She's had phases since then where she wakes at night to go potty, but then that abruptly ended. She still wears a pull-up at nap, and pees about half the time during naps.

Nighttime is a different story. She pees SO MUCH at night still! At this point, it's hard for me to imagine her being night trained. She has a small cup of milk about an hour before bed and pees before going to bed. Her diaper is just like her baby diapers were...soaked like 5 lbs! I don't mind that she still wears diapers at night, I'm just wondering when the nighttime thing will happen? I thought I'll watch her and see how it's going, but still the massive peeing at night.

She would probably die without a small cup of milk before bed, which is why I've tried to make it earlier. When we visited my grandmother, she didn't have a cup of milk any of the nights we were there and still peed a ton at night, which surprised me. Is this pretty normal? Is there anything I can do to help the process or should I just continue to wait and see how it goes? (For any of you who saw my post recently about the Urinary Problems...we switched detergents, ditched the softener, and just changed soaps this week. The redness has been gone since switching detergents, and when she is red it's just a bit and seems totally normally because it's only sometimes. No more complaining and no more discharge either.)
TIA:)

Every child is different. My DS continued night wetting until he was 7.5 yrs. old, despite everything we tried. After our ped. told us this was common and that he doesn't treat night wetting until at least 8 or 9 yrs. old, we stopped making an issue of it and DS wore Good Nights. DD, on the other hand, was night trained by 3.

I use to get Katie out of her bed around 11pm every night, before I went to bed.She was probably still sleeping when she was going LOL.I stopped doing that around 3yrs and she was fine.

Ditto Tripletmom with all of my dks. I'd take them in the bathroom right before I'd go to sleep and they never remembered it the next day. All of my dks night-trained right along with daytime training but they were all older than Natalie when we potty-trained. I really wouldn't worry about it until she's at least 3yo and even then, I think it's pretty common for kids to have trouble making it through the night. My oldest trained earliest and rarely wet the bed from the beginning. My youngest still has a nighttime accident once every 3 months or so.

Ditto...also took dd right before we went to bed at about 11pm.

My kids were older, when they trained, so night-time dryness just went with it. They both wet the bed once, and never did it again.

Like was said, all kids are different. And in this case, I'm not much help. DD was night time trained a long time before she was day time trained. She drank her small sippy of milk at bedtime, went potty and then held it the rest of the night. Day time was a different story. She would get too intent on playing and forget to go potty if I didn't send her until it was too late. And sometimes she would even argue with me that she didn't need to go and 5 minutes later would have an accident. She was almost 4 before she stopped having accidents on any regular basis.

My only advice is to make sure that you have a waterproof mattress cover on the bed.

Rylee is still in diaperd at night. I think it's just too long for her to go all night still. I have tried putting her in panties and she wets the bed and doesn't even budge. She sleeps in it all night, so I put her back in diapers. I figure, she will lead me like everything else she has done. When she's ready, she will do it.

Thank you! I won't worry about it. :)
