Toddler waking up at 5am?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Toddler waking up at 5am?
By Mrsheidi on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 - 05:54 am:

Ok, I understood if he's sick...on Monday, he woke up at 4am because he had trouble breathing. (Went to the ER again. This time I was smart and brought his portable DVD player...eh eh eh.)
But, now he's on meds and breathing better and he's waking up at 5:00 or 5:30am. He's fully awake, asking for mommy and in great spirits.
Yesterday, he napped from 8:30-10:30 and then 1:30-5pm (I had to wake him up). Should I wake him up earlier? Did any of you go through an early wake up like this? He's still in his crib. He's 33 inches so i don't know if he's getting to big for the crib or what...??

ps- lately, he's been going to bed at 9pm.

It might be the meds. My dd used to have to be on albuterol and prednisone when she was his age and it always wound her up.

either that or he's an early bird. Maybe have the second nap end by 3:30-4p.

I don't know anything about the meds, but it sounds like he's sleeping an awful lot during the day. Is he back to taking 2 naps just because you notice how tired he is? I would probably trying to get rid of one of those naps. I'm sure he'll be a real grouch, but he'll get into the routine.

I think *technically* it's 36" tall for going out of the crib. (the recommendation anyway)

Natalie is just the opposite. She barely sleeps an hour to an hour and 15min. a day and feels great. She's even skipping naps about 2 days/week now. (Goes to bed for an hour, but talks and sings instead of sleeping.)

I don't think I would change much now if this all started after he started the meds. But, if this was going on before, or continues after he is off the meds, I would also suggest dropping the morning nap and taking one right after lunch. It does seem like a lot of sleep to me too.

I think he takes the 2 naps because he wakes up so early. It was the early waking that started the cycle. I will try to wake him up earlier today from his second nap...it's so hard to do that. He looks SO peaceful and sweet when he sleeps! :)

BTW, he normally naps from 1-3:30pm every day. Scott and his brother took naps until they were at least 3. (Or so my FIL tells me.)

When Natalie went through waking at 5am she wanted to take 2 naps, too, but I wouldn't let her! :) I kept her going until her 1:00 nap and she got out of that routine of early waking pretty quickly. I think you might be feeding it by letting him sleep off that early wake time.

I suppose I was being selfish and wanted some "me" time after our hospital trip... :(
He didn't take his afternoon nap today so hopefully I won't be posting so early again tomorrow. :)
I'm also going to hold off his meds until tomorrow morning so he's not so wound up all night.

It sounds like he needs just one nap. Maybe a little less sleep during the day will help?

Taylor goes down at 1 and wakes at about 3:30 or 4. Then she goes to bed around 8:45 or 9. She usually wakes up between 7 & 7:30 every morning.

Hopefully you aren't reading this until mid or late morning and it has all worked itself out. LOL:)
