Waking up to go potty
Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Waking up to go potty
Natalie is waking once each night and often once during a nap to get up and go potty. (She's still in diapers at nap and bedtime) The last 3 days at night she's been dry when she wakes at around 3am, pees, then is dry when she gets up around 7am. She's waking midway through naps for the same deal. Often for naps she has trouble getting back to sleep, although she seems so tired. Nighttime, about 80% of the time she gets back to sleep alright, the rest of the time it takes her a half hour or so of so fussing before she goes back to sleep. What did you do about having to pee at night? For naps, I can watch her fluid intake a little more closely, although she's a drinker so it's hard. She has a small cup of milk before bedtime, about half hour before going to bed, so she pees right before going to bed. Any suggestions? Did your kids start waking up nightly to go potty? She WON'T potty in her diaper to save her life. She had a poop accident last week in her diaper before she fell asleep for a nap. It was a runny mess so I'm sure she couldn't control it but she was so upset by it. It just grosses her out now I think. I don't mind getting up once a night for her to potty, but is there a better way? I also think it's disrupting her nap sleeping and she's not getting what she needs during that time because like I said, often for a nap she can't go back to sleep and seems frustrated that she can't. Any suggestions?
We cut Timmy off from water for about and hour before bedtime except for brushing his teeth. If there is only 30 minutes between drinking the milk and bed time, I'd bet that's why she's up at 3am. On the up side, that is great that she is waking up to go potty. She's doing great.
I also think she's doing great! This is all part of the process. I had to get up with my kids to go pee at night until they were about 5 or 6. Then they just started doing it on their own. DD would cry, and initially we tried to find out what was wrong, but she was half asleep and incoherent. Then we learned to just pick her up, put on the toilet, let her pee and then put her back into bed.
Trina-Thankfully Natalie says "I have to go pee pee" or we'd be in the same boat! On the downside though, sometimes she wakes up SO much that it takes a bit for her to get back to sleep. Today at nap she was really sleepy so she went right back down. It doesn't help that I'm using leftover regular diapers and not pull-ups. I'm trying to finish them up. Only about 8 left now! I think she's doing great, too. I wasn't sure how early I should cut her off. Amanda - That gives me an idea. We'll try an hour before bed for the milk tonight and see if that helps. She's only having maybe 3oz, but maybe that's still a lot for her. She does pee pretty good right before bed, but it's obviously not enough. Thank you!!
Maybe try taking her to the potty before she wakes to go. That way she is still half alseep.
My best friend used to wake up her kids around 11 every night and have them go pee. It seemed to work for her and it worked out great for the kids becase they where still half asleep, just like Annie posted.
