Mommy brag/ question?
Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Mommy brag/ question?
Hello! I have seen a few mommy brags lately and thoght I might join in the fun!~ Zoe is 2.5 and knows all her letters by sight, all her colors and shapes and can count to 40! She has been taking swimming lessons and has really grown so comfy in the water- it is so fun to watch! The way she talks like a little grown up just cracks me up! My question is this- is she on par with the averages for what she knows?? We have never been in a daycare setting so she does not have that exposure and most of her friends are either older or younger! We will probably do pre-school when she is 4- so is there anything I should be "concerned" about her knowing before she goes?? I am just curious- I am not a beleiver in the whole teaching too early- the things she knows are just things she has picked up through play. I just wondered if there were things I ought to expose her too before school?? Thanks in advance! It is nice to brag a little online since it never feels like a comparison if you know what I mean! Thanks Ladies if you got this far!
OMG! She can count to 40, I think that's incredible. Matthew is just shy of 2.5 and I think he can count to 4. He knows his colours and shapes but does not recognize letters and numbers, well just a few here and there and he cannot sing his abcs yet. I think she's doing fantastic and you have no worries! Great job! We are at home to, not much exposure to others his age or daycare, however I do have him enrolled in a program 3 mornings a week starting September. More for me than anything, Mommy needs a break.
Natalie just turned 2. She says her abc's, knows the difference between letters and numbers, recognizes 1,2,3,4,8, counts to 14, and knows several nursery rhymes. She knows her shapes and 3 colors, although the other colors she can't name but relates them to something she knows. (Example: I show her 'red'. She will say the wrong color, but match it to the right item in her mind. She will say "that's green like ketchup". For blue she might say "that's yellow like blue's clues." I can't figure her out but she's getting SOMETHING for those colors!) Natalie also talks so grown up and it kills me. Her new thing is "What in the world is going on here?" She also understands big/little, loud/soft, things like that, and follows instructions VERY well. She seems to be a very good listener. I think your Zoe is doing great and you have no worries at all. I know you are very proud as you should be! I think the best thing you can do is keep up the good work. Exposing her to rhyme as much as possible, stories, and lots of pretend. Great job!!!
Thanks- she is big into pretending- I have to spend many hours out of my day pretending to be whatever character she has deemed me to be! LOL! She has always been big into books and we do alot of art type stuff. We are out alot and around kids often, I just wondered if the "school" setting makes a difference! (not that I have any interest in daycare...just not for me)
Not for me either, so I know what you mean. I'm a developmental therapist for 0-3's, so I have an assessment for this age but let me tell you, all three of our kids are past all of that. Natalie's into "birthday parties" right now. She has some plastic cake, hats from her birthday, and a bday plate and that's a big deal. She even has certain things she wants you to say, and she will remind you if necessary! Sounds like we do a lot of the same things during our day. Natalie takes gymnastics, participates in the library activity hour, and is in Kindermusik, a)so that she is around other kids (we do not live in a neighborhood and don't plan on more children) and b)to get comfortable with taking turns, rules, and the "teacher". She has thrived in both settings and really loves it. Sounds like you are doing all the right things!
My DD is 5 1/2 and still has a few letters she forgets and can't recognize. She also doesn't count to 40. I think she's on the average or maybe below with letter recognition. She's more of a social butterfly. So, I would say your DD is advanced. She'll also probably be great at memorization. Also, what I've found is that if you don't use it on a regular basis, they will lose it. I think all children have their own special gifts and talents, so I try not to compare DD to other kids her age. They are all so different, especially in learning. I would just keep doing what your doing. She's obviously doing great!
