When can we start yogurt and cottage cheese?
Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: When can we start yogurt and cottage cheese?
I can't remember and I loaned my books out. Mason is a serious eater and I need some ideas. I know he would love yogurt and cottage cheese would be great for him to self feed. He's already eating table food (Cut up spaghetti, bread, chicken, carrots, mashed potatoes, you name it)really well and is starting to reject the baby food. I think he likes chewing. So, I am in need of some new ideas! (I'm a little rusty.)
I'm rusty too, but I think he's still a little young for dairy. This article says 8-10 mos. for introducing cheese, yogurt and cottage cheese. Age-by-age guide to feeding your baby and toddler Go Mason! Sounds like he has a healthy appetite, just like his cousin, Tyler!
Thanks, Trina. Only 2 weeks to go then. I've already given him a little shredded cheese when we've been out to eat. I did find some articles that say you can start out with unsweetened yogurt as a first food. I don't mind waiting a bit though. Yes, and he's a big boy like Ty was too! LOL
Well, I was one who never went by the books much. I just made sure to introduce one new food at a time so I could watch for allergies. I do know that I fed mine yogurt and cottage cheese well before they were a year old, and they did fine. They didn't get it constantly, but regularly. It never bothered them. But I think you have to be careful that dairy doesn't constipate them.

Wow, the little man is growing quickly! I keep thinking he's 6 mos., but he is almost 8 mos.. That first year really does go by too fast! Luvn29, FWIW, I use "the books" as a general guideline, not a bible. The guidelines are there for good reasons, and since there are food allergies in our family, it's a good idea to be cautious.
I completely understand Trina. I was just giving her my experiences. That's why I stated that I always started only one food at a time, to watch for allergies.
I know, it's gone by quickly! Poor Jay and I have not been alone for longer than 20 minutes for nearly a year? Yikes, that's sad. I have to admit, I always just follow my insticts and use the books for questions or concerns. For example, Mason is a tummy sleeper. I worried and worried, but he was so happy and content that way! My Dr. always puts it best.."He's your baby, you can do what you want." He gives me the information and I make the decision. I love that. I think I might have to buy Super Baby Food again and get some more ideas. I'm out of fresh ideas! Thanks again, everyone.
Both of my children were tummy sleepers. They refused to sleep on their backs, or even their sides!
My babies liked their tummies, also. It wasn't as much an issue with Sarah, in 1989, but by 1992, they were making the side or back sleeping an issue. Emily slept much better on her tummy and both of my kids just slept right on the crib mattress and could move their heads from side-to-side, right from birth, so I never really worried about it.
