A state trooper posted this today on the CPS listserve I'm on. Girl, 3, dies after accident By Allyson Bird Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Wednesday, July 05, 2006 Skyler Dejarnette, a 3-year-old Niceville girl, died Tuesday night after an accident on Florida's Turnpike south of Fort Pierce. She had been listed in critical condition at St. Mary's Medical Center where she was flown after the Monday accident. The girl was in a child-restraint seat, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. The report says falling luggage within the car during the collision likely brought on the injuries that caused Dejarnette's death. Unfortunately, the media did not tell the whole story. According to investigators, the 3 year old was properly restrained in a booster seat behind the driver. Her one year old sister was properly restrained in a car seat in the right, rear. She received minor injuries. They were in a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix and rear ended a Ford Explorer on the Florida's Turnpike. Their 22 year old mother was driving. They should have all survived the crash. Investigators believe luggage and a TV monitor that was not secured caused the fatal injuries of the child. Just a reminder to parents, to secure all those loose items in the vehicle.
Thanks, Trina. Good info. Niceville is near where Annie and I live.
OMG! How sad. That poor mother.
In my work I see this a lot - 50 pound bag of dog food, big jug of laundry detergent, etc. Car rolls and things fly around - even hitting the driver. This is true for items in the trunk. Items will come forward in a collision and hit the back of the back seat and put too much load on it and cause worse injury than you think - even if those back seat passengers are wearing seat belts.
Thank you, Trina and Mommmie. I don't think about this happening. Very good info.
That's so sad, yes it is very important to secure everything in your vehicle even your dog. People laugh at me because I make my dog wear a seat belt. My biggest concern is having a 120 pound animal flying around the inside of my van. Thanks Trina for helping to keep us all safe.
