Vaginal irritation/redness since switching to panties

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Vaginal irritation/redness since switching to panties
By Reds9298 on Tuesday, June 27, 2006 - 08:02 pm:

Natalie went to panties about 2-3 weeks ago. Since then, she's had numerous days where outside of her labia looks fine, but inside is very red and looks inflamed. She has complained just a couple of times, but not lately at all, and I noticed that it's pretty red again tonight. I put A+D on her like I would for diaper rash, but it doesn't look like diaper rash. It goes away, but then will come back.

Could it be her panties? She wears Hanes and a few other character panties that I'm not sure of the brand on. What other choices would we have if it were the panties? They are cotton lined of course. TIA:)

Katie still gets a red vagina at times.I think it has to do with not wiping properly. We only use cotton underwear also.Sometimes being in a bathing suit too long contributes to it.I use Desitin cr. and it clears up by the morning. It seldom happens now but we do deal with it once in awhile and she's 7.

Kaitlyn gets it as well and it's generally from not wiping well.

Hmmm...she wipes and then I wipe her. I thought maybe it WAS from the wiping and the TP on her skin. I guess we'll try to do a better job of wiping. :)

I think that happened to my kids, when they got more independent with wiping, but then didn't always do that good a job.

Could be the laundry detergent irritating her.

I ditto laundry detergent. But also it could be from over wiping. If she just pees, I would let her do the wiping and call it good enough, don't double wipe. Also try washing a group of her panties with very little soap and double rinse. Or maybe even no soap, just hot water and see if that does the trick. Then you could go on the hunt for a new detergent :)

Bella does this too. I've always assumed that she hasn't wiped well enough since we already use a dye-free, perfume-free detergent. We still use A&D on her when she does complain about it (maybe once a month and she'll often do it herself now). I hope you figure it out soon.

We also use a dye-free, perfume-free detergent because of DH's skin. I hadn't even thought of detergent.
Thanks for ideas ladies. :)

What kind of toilet paper do you use? It could be over wiping. I don't have a little girl, so no experience. Good luck.

I switched to that Tide Cold Water a few months back. Then both the kids started having mysterious rashes and itchiness. My ds had red bumps on his bottom and watch constantly scratching there. I switched to the Tide with no perfumes and no dyes ( forget what it is called) and they are both doing fine and have no itchiness at all.

Dd also got a very itchy and red there when she took bubble baths.

I can't use Tide liquid. Emily got a beautiful case of hives from it. The Tide powder was fine and any other liquid detergent has been fine, just not Tide. We generally use the Purex brand, because it's cheap.

We've been using Cheer Free since day one, simply because that's what we've always had to use for DH. We can also ONLY use Bounce sheets, in the pink.

I highly recommend flushable kandoo wipes for freshly potty trained kids :) They are wonderful, and they are soft and moist, so they aren't irritating to the skin.

Breann- We have those, but I've only used them for poopy times when it was really needed. I thought getting her used to the TP would be a good thing, so I haven't been using the Kandoo's unless really necessary. Maybe we will start using them more.
