Cold in a newborn
Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Cold in a newborn
A friend of mine has a toddler and a 1 month old. The toddler has a cold. She's afraid that the newborn will get it too. Connor never had a cold until he was 6 months old, so when she asked me "What should I do if my 1 month old gets a cold?" Do you give them any meds or do you just "wait it out" and suction them like crazy?
Mason got 2 colds very early on. Is she nuring? From what I read, just keep nursing and nursing. Your body will create natural antibodies for the baby. My Dr. told me he was too young to take anything, so I washed my hands like crazy. They also did tell me to keep DD and the baby as separate as possible if she was sick. If the baby does get it, just suction and try to keep them content. I brought Mason into the bathroom and just ran a hot shower. I also climbed into the tub with him and the steam did wonders. Tell her not to worry too much. I was in a panic over the whole thing and Mason was fine. *fingers crossed* for her.
Thanks, Eve! I just called her and left a message on what you said. That should help relieve her worries. Thanks so much!
That's right , he is too young for any medications. Suction and vaporizer if she doens't want to sit in the bathroom. IF it's a bad cold she may want to take him in to the doctor.
Lots of suction (and I mean lots) and Tylenol and Motrin helped my little one when he got a cold at 2 1/2 mths old. My DH got sick and gave it to DS (not on purpose of course) and the dr said he was too young for antibiotics so I just alternated Tylenol and Motrin as suggested by some other moms. But you could just use one or the other if you prefer. Just FYI, Motrin/Tylenol can be binding so make sure to supplement a little prune juice so the baby doesn't get constipated. 1 oz. juice to 1 oz. water does the trick. Hope everyone gets better soon!
We used saline solution to help w/ the suctioning, but for that young, no meds at all. No juices either. I slept in the recliner in upright position so baby could breath during night time and naps. Stuffy noses on an infant is the worst thing to go thru...poor thing.
If she is bfing, the baby might be ok. I would absolutely NOT give any meds to a child that young without consulting the dr first.
