Need game ideas for high chair and 16 month old....

For those who have seen my last two day posts, I am at the end of my sanity. Sandysmom suggested finding some games he can play in his high chair. Do any of you have ideas for safe and hopefully non messy things to occupy his curriousity for at least 20 minutes (more than 20 would be really great). He does eat/taste most stuff and I am certain whatever it is will end up on the floor. TIA. I will owe you my life if we come up w/ the perfect solution.
I used to do this with DD (my busy child) while I was trying to prepare meals. She loved measuring cups, wooden spoons and misc. toddler safe kitchen tools. Yes, they often landed on the floor and needed to washed before using but they kept her occupied while I was trying to cook nearby. Another trick that worked was to fill the kitchen sink with an inch or two of water and let her play with funnels, etc.. I still had to keep an eye on her but again, this kept her amused. Being allowed to play in the Tupperware cupboard was also a big treat. We turned the room that's supposed to be our dining room into a playroom. It's right off the kitchen/LR. I gated it off, making it essentially a large playpen. It was childproofed and contained toys. This was a God send!
get a big, cheap plastic tablecloth and put it under the high chair = no messes on your floor. I got that tip from my mil. Water was really the big thing at that age. Yes, it made a mess but it was worth it. My dd used to love to splash her hands in it and then bang them on the tray. also, those board books, really colorful ones with lots of pictures, those little a,b,c blocks are good for the high chair, one of those spill proof bubble things, good luck!
Trina, that is where we have our toys too. However, that is where the kitchen pass thru is located also. THANKFULLY my friend just dropped off a presure gate to put up there. It is up. Hopefully he won't undo it. We have our little freezer in this room. Today I found the brand new saftey lock torn off. SIGH. Well, at least it took a few weeks before that happened. On the brighter side, I am certain he is smart and curious about his surroundings and should do well when he is an adult. I keep teasing w/ DH that DD looks like him and thinks like me. DS looks like me and thinks like DH. Both DH and DS drive me crazy with the way they work with the world around them.
Actually, i think that was Sherri, (Tripletmom). But, I will wrack my brain and see what I come up with. I'll also do some calling around too. ((((((HUGS))))))
Oops. Sorry, Sherri for not giving proper credit for the great idea. At least I realized there was a usable suggestion LOL My brain is fried as you can get from my posts.
You could freeze some small, but not too small, plastic figurines in an ice cube and let him dip it in some warm water to watch it "melt" to get to the toy? Does he put things in his mouth often? What about plastic Easter eggs that you can put together and pull apart? Connor loved those. Plasic cups that stack...or, just a teletubby DVD could set him for hours if I let him! I also agree about board books too, with lots of pictures.
