What kind of sippy cup...
Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: What kind of sippy cup...
Do you use? I started my boys on Nuby brand b/c it has a soft silicone spout and no valve to worry about. They started using these around 6mths and basically chewed to get there water out and it helped with teething.I've tried switching to a harder spout with a vavle and they can't seem to figure it out.I only switched b/c the nuby brand has split a bigger hole and now the water is pouring out.
I had sippy cups that leaked like crazy. They make them so much better now!
Natalie did nothing but chew on the soft spout ones...never drank from them. I went to the hard spout and we used Playtex from the beginning and still do. They just really work for us. I tried misc. soft spouts and Natalie just didn't seem to get it. Once I went to hard, she figured it out. Good luck! I hear lots of great things about the Nubys.
I started dd out with nuby cups, but the liquid came out too fast. Also, one time, I put the cup in the diaper bag and it turned over and everything got wet. I guess they are not made uniformly. Wal Mart does have a transition bottle that is very nice. dd did very well on that. She did not take to the hard sippy cups easily. After the Nuby incident, we bought her a Gerber sippy with handles and a softer spout. She really liked that, but after a while, the valve started falling out on it's own. Thank goodness she uses the harder sippys now. I hate the valve, but they are what works best for us. I hope you find something that works for you.

I just used the typical old style sippy cups with the lids that pop on. Eventually they did use the no spill playtex kind. But you have to suck on those to get the liquid out, so it isn't much different from a bottle (as far as the teeth go). They were great for travel. I finally bought a couple of travel cups that had straws, they had a snap down lid feature. With three kids, I bet you learn quicker than most of us that you should make them sit down to snack and drink when you are home, so you don't have crumbs and lost cups everywhere! In the preschool they just have them use small dixie cups to have drinks.
Reds-I always used the playtex with Katie and still have cups from when she was little.I loved them.I only used these Nuby cups b/c they got them at there baby shower and I thought they were a great idea WRONG.I wish I would have started them on the playtex first. When I give them to them now they think they have to chew them to get something out.I'll just keep trying and eventually they'll get the hang of it.I had Katie off the bottle at a year and onto a cup and I was hoping the same for the boys. Sandysmom-I know what you mean about the cup leaking in the diaper bag.The exact samething happened to me and if was a pain in the butt.Thank you for the information but I think I'll be more persisant with the hard spout and just let them learn.
Kaye-We were posting at the same time.I just tried the cups that the lids just snap on and what a big mistake. They had no valve. All three of them had the cups and shaking them over there heads.Very funny but very messy. They can drink out of dixie cups great but not realistic for 3 of them all wanting it at the same time.YES we all sit on our bums at snack time. They are really good little boys who listen to direction quite well for 11 months.I vacuum alot these days LOL
I found that my youngest had a really hard time using a hard spouted sippy cup but we started her very young on one (around 5-6 months). I realized that she had no trouble sucking from a straw and found a style of no-spill cups with a straw and flip down lid from Walmart. I tried a similar style from Playtex and they didn't work as well but any straw was better than the hard spouts that I'd used with my other two. Good luck finding one that works for you.
I also did straw cups for a while (early on, after the soft spouts didn't fly) and we both loved them, BUT they were a bear to clean! Whether I washed by hand or in the dishwasher, there was always mold in them that couldn't be gotten out. I ditched those pretty quick after that.
I don't recommend the hard spout because the child has to suck on it and it wears down the front teeth. This happened to my son.
Annie my DD's cup always had scrape marks on the spout from her teeth, thats the downfall for using them. Reds-If I can't clean anything well I don't use it. I never had a problem cleaning the valves/spouts from her sippy cups. Tink-I never thought about the straw style cups I will give these sippy cups a little longer. If we don't succeed I will give it a shot Thx
We skipped the whole sippy cup thing entirely.
Sandysmom-I went to Wal-mart yesterday and found the gerber cups. They are not the silicone but they are a little soft but it looks like the playtex lids.I also like the valve in it.It's like a white plastic round piece.I also like that they have 2 handles.Adam is having no problems but the other 2 monkeys would rather chew on them still.I will try them with juice today and see if that encourges more.Thx for the info
I'm glad you found them. Little dd loves juice and when I gave her a cup with juice in it, and she "sipped" on it enough to taste it, that was it. From then on, we have had no problem with sippy cups. On our Gerber cup, where you put in the valve is soft like the spout, and for us, that stretched out after a while and the valve kept falling out. Be careful of that.
Thx Sandy.
Sherri, trying not to be a pain, LOL! dd also has one of these cups & I love it because the spout sits up higher and it is wider. I have tried it before, lol & I did not need to use teeth to help suck out the liquid but obviously my mouth is bigger than hers. Munchkin Healthflow
Thx Sandy-They have so much of a selection out there.I'm happy with the gerber style. They are getting the hang of it slowly. If I never started with those darn silicone spouts I don't think I'd be having such a problem. They associate cups now with chewing.I gave them I little juice for encouragement.I don't like to give juice though.
I understand about the juice. My friend is a pediatric dietician and she said no more than 2oz of water mixed with 2oz of juice per day. That is all I do for little dd. She said parents think they are doing right by their kids by giving them juice all day, but even natural fruit juice has a lot of natural sugars and it's loaded with carbs. She said that too much juice can lead to extra pounds that kids don't need. One tip was to get them accustomed to just plain old water, and only give them milk/formula three times a day with their meals once they reach the sippy cup age. Ok, i'm going on & on, LOL and I'm sure you already knew that. Sorry
Thx Sandy-I appreciate you're input. You're not going on and on LOL.I'm just cutting back on the 4th bottle now. They usually get bottles at 7am,11am,2pm&5pm. I'm cutting the 2pm 1st and hoping to get them using the cup at that time.I never gave my DD juice until she was much older.I usually put water into the cup but its no motivator for them. When Adam got that 1st taste of juice he learned very quickly.I agree with NO sugar or treats for young children.I always sprinkle wheat germ on all the food they eat also.
