Toddlers, Illness, and Sleep Schedules

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Toddlers, Illness, and Sleep Schedules

When your toddler is sick, do you try to keep them on their regular sleep schedule is possible?

For instance, Natalie has the stomach bug. She's actually recovering today. She's so tired and weak. She's been lying around for 2 days, poor thing. Anyway, like yesterday I woke her from her nap like always, but then she laid in bed for a while after that and dozed a few times. This morning she's fallen asleep on her Daddy on the couch. Her normal nap is at 1:00

I'm BIG on schedules because *I* like things better that way. For you scheduled people, do you TRY to stay on a schedule when they're sick or do you just go with it?

No, I wouldn't. And I was a big schedule person too. But when they are sick, they NEED extra sleep to help them get better. But as soon as dd felt better, I got her back on schedule pronto. LOL

I try to stick to the same routine as much as possible but if they need the extra sleep, I give it to them. I let them eat when they feel like or as much as they want (depending on the aliment). I hope she feels better soon.

I always kept my toddlers on a schedule, I still do, really. But I need extra sleep when I'm sick and so I really try to let my child determine when he or she needs to sleep. The only time I try not to let them give in is if it will be a truly inconvenient time. Like wanting a nap at 6pm when I know that they won't sleep through the night at that point. They'll wake up at 8 and want to be up for a couple of hours. I just try to get through the illness and in the day or two after I'm sure everything is back to normal, I start implementing a schedule again.

That's kind of what we're doing. She's sleeping a lot today and we're just letting her. This is really the first time she's had something that made her so tired!

Thanks for the advice ladies and for the well wishes, too!

I also stick with the schedule at most times. If extra sleep is needed I let them sleep. The only way I dont change the schedule is too not get in the habit of co-sleeping or running to there every cry.If there is no fever and the appetite has been good I leave them in there cribs. If one wakes up and still no fever and is generally ok I have let them fall asleep in the baby swing.I try to keep everything as normal as possible and then we dont have to deal with changes when there well. Some habits are hard to break after.I hope everyone is back to normal soon
