Any tips for glycerin suppositories??
Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Any tips for glycerin suppositories??
Natalie has been constipated for 4 days. Long story short, after trying everything natural that I could think of, she's still in bad shape. I called the ped this afternoon and they recommended a glycerin suppository. I'm going to go to the pharmacy and pick them up when Natalie wakes from her nap. We've never done this before. Any hints or suggestions from those of you who have experience? A friend of mine said that they never worked for her dd because she could never keep them in. ???? Just picking your brains beforehand. I'm going to wait until dh gets home to do it. TIA
We had to use baby ones when Maddie was Natalie's age, they are liquid. We would sit her in the bathroom, insert it (it's like a bulb syringe), and try to keep her from moving for a few minutes. I never thought they worked well, and looking back, we should have just used the regular ones cut in half. Anyway, whichever type you use, try to keep it in for 15 minutes. You may have to administer them more than once over the day, depending on how bad she is. Good luck, we CONSTANTLY struggle with Madison, and it's not fun at all!!
Thanks for the advice Crystal! The doc said to get the pediatric ones, didn't suggest half or whole, and gave no other info about it. They said it should work within 30-45min. and if it doesn't to call back in and possibly go to an enema. She said it might take two, but to call if one didn't work.
Just make sure you use some kind of lubricant & that you get it far enough in.
Have you tried putting some vaseline on a Q-tip and stimulating her bum Rub in circular motions about a half dozen times and see what happens.I've always done this when needing a last resort I've never had to use suppositories so far.I now give my boys prunes(baby food) twice a week and havent had the problem so far.Good Luck
Thanks! Just got back from the pharm and got a liquid suppository like Crystal mentioned. The pharmacist said the liquid is better than the glycerin inserts. We've always been able to remedy the problem with natural methods up to this point, but this is the worst it's been so I finally called the ped for suggestions. I'll keep the vaseline and q-tip in mind though! I hadn't thought of that.
Good luck! We had to use the glycerin ones with my DD all the time when she was a baby. My DH would have to do it and would just hold it in place for as long as he could and she would poop right away. They worked like a charm.
