Growing Kids...A rant about teens and clothes

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Growing Kids...A rant about teens and clothes

Especially my teenager. I just can't keep the boy in pants! Everytime I turn around he's outgrown them and I never seem to be able to find any his size in second hand stores anymore. He refuses to wear jeans and only wears track pants.

What brought this up is him coming to me this morning asking for pants and me going into his room and finding at least 4 pairs in his drawers that fit..so I said "I think the problem is that you just don't like these" and he just looked at me and walked away. *sighs* It's not as hard with the smaller ones but now that he's a teenager it is and with the way finances are right now I just don't have the money to be buying him brand new stuff.

How old is he? What size does he wear?

I know exactly what you mean. We got up to get ready for church last weekend and my middle ds that *did* have several pairs of church pants suddenly couldnt fit into even his biggest pants!! Size 14- he just decided to skip that size I guess? lol He had also outgrown his shoes. :( So, yesterday afternoon he and I spent the day at the mall shopping for him. Which was great timing since they were having some pretty good sales!

My oldest ds went thru this for a couple of yrs and he has tapered off a *little* in his growth spurts for now. phew! He is also picky like your ds- he will wear jean- but only a certain color of denim, certain style, certain brand. ugh!!

Mine have been eating up all of our groceries within just a couple of days too!

He's a size 14-16 last time I checked but most of his pants are size 10-12 :( He's going to be 15 in august. He's not built big he's just getting taller all the time!

I'm soooooooo thankful I only have one in the teen years! LOL!

I'm glad they had good sales! :) I can't remember being as picky as my child was when I was a teen but I bet I was lol

It's not so hard with my 9 year old he just gets all the stuff his brother outgrows lol but it's sure hard with the oldest one.

Do you have Steve & Barry's stores there in Canada? My 15 yr old loves to shop there and I don't mind because everything in the store is $6.98 or less. They have jeans/khakis/track pants ans shorts all kinds of shirts and hoodies. Most of it is collegiate sportswear but they do carry their own brand especially in jeans and polos. At this age they want to be stylish. I am not able to buy brand name clothing unless we can find it at Value City (discounter that does buyouts), but he will do the Steve & Barry's. It's too bad you didn't post this a couple weeks ago, I just gave 2 boxes of that size to charity and would have gladly sent them to you. Do you have Salvation Army and St. Vencent stores by you. I do get lucky there for my younger one. Good Luck!

I looked it up on the net Bemerry and I can't seem to find one where I live, It sounds great though! I'm going to keep looking I live in a big city so maybe it's hidden somewhere odd.

I'm making a few calls to see if I can find places to get some inexpensive/free clothes for him that are in his style at least :) He doesn't seem to care too much about "style" as long as it's to his lol

Thank you so much for your kind words on sending me that stuff if you'd known :) I never thought of posting here. I was just frustrated this morning.

We do have the salvation army here. I'm going to see if I can get him over there over the next few days and see if we can find something he likes that is priced decently. It's a shame with the ones here they tend to price stuff rather highly if it's in remotely decent shape. (everyone complains about it). Mostly I just see jeans there and for whatever reason he's picky and doesn't like to wear them lol my 9 year old on the other hand loves jeans! :)

Catherin, I sympathize, strongly. My middle son shot up about 6 inches in 7th & 8th grade, and went through 3 shoe sizes in one year.

But, on his "style" preferences. I think it is time for you to sit down with this young man and do as I did with my sons. This is how much money comes in every month - this is how much goes for rent, groceries, telephone, internet, heat, light, and itemize each of the necessities. This is how much is left for clothes, treats, entertainment.

My sons were shocked by the numbers. And, after they were given the numbers and I answered their questions, I got a lot less "Mom, why can't I have" from them. A dose of reality is often a good thing. He's more than old enough to understand the numbers and the choices.

I have to agree with you Ginny. We've had the money talk before but I don't think he thought of it in terms of clothes, too and it was never to the extent you mentioned.

I am going to take him to the thrift store this week using the money that he has leftover to see if we can find him some new pants. He's always saying "I can use it for field trips through school and the like" but really all he's been using it for since no field trips have come up that cost money is to buy drinks at school.

I plan on talking to him about it tomorrow. He won't be home late tonight.

Thank you soooooooo much for the advice Ginny you're my single mom Guru :) You've been through it all I always appreciate the advice you have to give.

My kids aren't at that age yet, but I know what you mean about growing! Every time I turn around, they are growing taller, and their pants are above their ankles! It seems we can't stay caught up with them and it just gets so expensive, doesn't it. Even when you don't buy the expensive name brand clothing.

I definitely sympathize with you. Hope you can find him some good, cheap pants that he likes, too. It's so difficult being a kid, and finding clothes to fit the budget and to fit in, too!

Catherin, do you guys have The Great Canadian Superstore out there yet? It's one of the Loblaws stores. They have some amazing deals on clothes for everyone in the family. Giant Tiger does, too.
