Biting Baby

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Biting Baby

Here we go again, it's that time, yup Cameron is biting me at the end of our nursing sessions. Man it makes me want to stop, Matthew did the same thing at about the same time.

I usually yelp and then say "NO biting Mommy!" and stop nursing. He just looks up at me and smiles.

Arrgghhh, frustrating.

Any suggestions?

I know it's hard (btdt) but try not to yelp. He's getting a reaction out of you that he obviously find funny. Just very matter of factly take him off, tell him "no biting" and he's done. If he's still hungry he'll learn pretty quickly that if he wants to continue eating he can't bite mommy. If he's not still hungry, pay close attention to when his attention is starting to wander and try to anticipate or learn when he's going to bite. Like I said, I know it's hard. It's usually a pretty short phase, though.

On a side note, I think this is one reason why every woman I've talked to that's nursed and later on gotten her nipple pierced said it didn't hurt and why I've heard for men it's excruciating. Men just can't handle pain the way we can! lol Heck, after being bitten by a teething baby, a little needle is nothing!

Yowch. My older one did that to me a few times, but then learned not to. I'm not sure what I did, except take her off the breast. How do you not yelp? It HURT! She learned fast, how to nurse without teeth. She got her first two teeth, when she was 5 months old.

Ditto Cat. I'd say "No biting" very sternly and close up shop. If your baby is biting then he is likely through with nursing. he can't bite and nurse at the same time, because the tongue covers up the bottom teeth during active nursing. It'll take a few times and he'll get the message. Those new baby teeth are razor sharp though, aren't that? Youch!! I remember.

I gave my son breast milk for about 3 weeks ( I used a pump cuz my son couldn't latch onto me) and I stayed in constant pain so much (my breats feltlike they were gonna explode) so I had to quit. So I can't help much there.

But mine did go through this biting phase where you would be playing with him and out of the blue he would bite your cheek, neck, arm, anything he could get his mouth on, and he never liked to use teethers...he even chewed on his crib and chipped it all on the top. And he still bites from time to time, one time he bit my finger and drew blood. After that, everytime he bit me I lightly spanked his leg and he quit.

But if he's biting you it may be time to stop nursing. You can still give him breastmilk in a bottle if you like.
