Yo Trina - Baby Bundle?
I saw (and bought) something called a Baby Bundle - a zip open sack to put the baby into for travel. It says on the package: "3/5 point harness sytem: Our reinforced openings on all of our Baby Bundles will accomodate existing and updated three and five point harness systems in your car seats, strollers, joggers and bike trailers. It also says "Safty straps are secured directly onto your baby." I opened it, and on the back there is a slot at the top, two slots one above the other near the bottom, and wide slots on both sides that close with velcro - I guess so you can open them wherever your restraint straps are. Before I send this to my beautiful granddaughter, is it really OK?
Ginny, I'm glad you asked! NO, it is not OK. Anything that comes between the baby and the car seat or the harness is not recommended. They can actually interfere with the proper functioning of the car seat. We recommend infant seat covers that stretch over the top of the car seat. Something like these: I suggest returning the one you bought and exchanging it for a style that stretches over the top. FWIW, I used a similar product before I knew better.
I wish they had had those covers, when my kids were little! Especially, when we went to visit my parents and were in the car for hours on the way home. It would have covered my babies for the trip to the car, but then it could have easily been taken off, when the car warmed up. I used to throw a blanket over a child, without a snowsuit on, since in a few minutes the car would be warm and my bundled baby would be too warm. I just think it would have been warmer than a thrown-over-the-top blanket.
Trina, do you know the brand names of the kind you recommend?
I have one that I bought at Walmart to use for demonstration purposes during car seat presentations. It's made by "gold bug" and called a "Reversible Carrier Cover". I bought this one and gave it to Mason. Did a quick search and found this... The Nuzzler There are many on the market. Just be sure to get one that does not have a layer under the baby.
I used something similar to the Eddie Bauer cover. It was WONDERFUL! Mine was just for winter. The reversible ones tend to not be as warm, and in our Indiana winter, I was just going for the warmth more than rain protection.
Thanks, Trina. I checked out the Eddie Bauer on-line catalog and they didn't have it, so I ordered one from Baby Polar Gear - it is Polaratec lined, which I like, because I find Polartec warm and snuggly.
