Pedia Care Infant Drops
Hi, I am new to the board as well as a new mommy. I ran across this site searching the net for side effects of pedia care on infants. My little one (Sophia) is 5 months old, she has had a runny nose for a while and now has a cough, the pediatrician suggested we give her Pedia Care. Which we have been doing for what seems like months, daycare as well as myself have noticed that after giving her the suggested dosage (by the doctor) she gets very cranky and fusses a whole lot and she can't be laid down because she will scream at the top of her lungs. She is not generally that way. Has anyone else had or heard of any such side effects? Should I be worried?
Hi Sophiasmom, Welcome to MV! Have her ears been checked recently to rule out ear infections? Hope she's doing better soon!
Well, while I don't think you should be "worried" about it, I do think that there is something about it that doesn't agree with her. Also, have you taken her into the doctors office? That seems like a very long time to be on the medicine. Usually, it says on the bottle to not take longer than x days. I would stop the medicine, take her into be checked out and if more medication is required, try a different kind. It obviously doesn't agree with her. Good luck!
She has been to the doctor 3 or 4 times in the past two weeks and the doctor keeps telling us to use the pedia care as needed. I began giving her tylenol but her darling dad said it was not working and gave her pedia care Saturday, needless to say we got 4 hours of sleep the entire night. I was just wondering if by chance anyone else's children had the same or similar reaction to the medication. Thank you for your advice and suggestions I greatly appreciate all the help I can get.
I am a little surprised that the dr isn't concerned with her reaction to the medicine. There has to be another option available for them to give her. I would call in and ask what else you can try. Her reaction doesn't seem to be worth it. It clearly is making her miserable.
Try a health food store and get some homeopathic meds...they are much gentler! Welcome to MV! I beleive Hylands makes a tablet for colds. I would definetely be looking for a possible second opinion if he is unconcerned!
This sounds like my DS. I would get a second opinion. Your DR should be a little more concerned. It's pretty obvious the pedia care isn't working. Sometimes ear problems are difficult to diagnose. Good luck.
It is very obvious that not only is the pediacare not working, as Tayjar says, but it is probably contra-indicated. I would be checking out a new pediatrician real soon if it were me. I had to do that when my oldest was about 2, and have been grateful ever since that I did. With respect to Hlgmom, I would be very reluctant to try homeopathic medications without first having another pediatrician check her over very thoroughly (unless the first one gets off his mental duff and does something real quick), and check, among other things, for infections and allergies. I also did a quick internet search and learned that Pedicare Drops contain Pseudoephedrine, and the dosage instructions on the internet say it should not be taken for more than 7 days. What does it say on the box the medicine came in, and on any inserts?
I get tired and cranky if I take medicine with pseudoephedrine in it. If she's had this for a month it may be allergies.
We all think of allergies and hives. But allergies can present themselves in many ways. As an infant the only way they can tell you there is a problem is to cry. Don't ignore this. Personally I would stop the meds and call a new doc. If I had to just guess I would think an allergy (to meds, to dyes, whatever) is causing a lot of fluid to build up in her throat and ears and when she lays down she just can't take it. Poor baby.
I think I would seek a second opinion, too.
Hello all, I want to thank all of you for your helpful advise. I wanted to clear up the fact that her doctor is generally very good about her needs and what is wrong with her. She is not one to ignore our concerns or dismiss them. Since I wasn't the one that took her to the last visit I do not know if she just dismissed the fact that my DD was having the reaction to the medicine or if my DH didn't push the issue. Dr did say that it was allergies since she was constantly having the runny nose and that we should take her comforter out of the crib, her stuffed animals out of her bedroom, dust and vaccumm more often than what we were doing. It seems that now she is getting better, her cough isn't as bad as it was last week and she isn't cranky like she was after taking the medicine (which we are no longer giving her). Thank you all for your suggestions, I will keep in mind to get a second opinion if I have any doubts on what the doctor is suggesting or if she seems disinterested or dismissive of my concerns.
