Very PROUD Mommy post!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Very PROUD Mommy post!
By Dana on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 - 08:30 am:

Okay, I posted last night and once again forgot to hit the final post button (that's 4 times now in the last month or so).

My daughter is a very gifted writer. She is even writing her own jokes now. The one I can remember is "What happened when the two dollars had babies?....They had quarter-druplets!"

She has written several stories, many I think she should submit to young writers magazines. But she doesn't feel ready yet.

So, our school presented an Arts contest. Kids are encouraged to submit stories, poems, dance routines, songs, muscial pieces, photography, drawing, paintings, etc as long as they were created by the child only.

I told her she should do this. She fought me ever inch of the way. And said "so you are going to FORCE ME to do something I don't want to do? I don't have a choice?" and I said "YES, that is right. You have no choice. You have talent and I think you can win." I'm sure her fear of failing or no results is what keeps her from putting out the effort.

So anyway, the night before the deadline, and after her bedtime, she had still not created anything. I told her to "get it done, now." She popped out a poem in 2 minutes, like I knew she could. It was a great poem.

Well, yesterday they announced the results.

DD WON FIRST PLACE IN HER SCHOOL IN HER CATEGORY!

She will be now go up against the winners of the local area schools. If she wins that, she will go to state, and get an overnight trip too....I think Tallahassee.

She has a good chance of winning local. After that she will have some tough compitition.

I don't know the poem, but I will have her recite it to me so I can share it.

Oh, and it was not judged by the teachers of our school. It was all outside sources (with experience of course), so there was no way prejudice could play a part in the winners.

I'll let you know how she does in the next step.

Wow! High^ to your daughter!

By Melanie on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 - 12:54 pm:

Congrats to your daughter!! I hope this does wonders to boost her confidence. It's hard to put yourself out there in a competition like this, but clearly she has a talent and should let it shine!

Keep us posted!

That is so cool! It is hard to put yourself out there. Congrats to her!

By Dana on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 - 09:01 pm:

Here is the poem. The topic for the contest was "WOW!" and they were to choose something that made them think or go "wow". She also had to write out her reason on how her entry fit that topic.

Candy

Oh, Candy. You're so sweet.
You warm my feet and...
tick
tick
tick
B~O~O~M! I explode.

Candy in my mouth
Tingling my nose
and a dancy-dance feeling in my toes.

BLASH! I explode.

And here is my favorite joke she told me. She made this one up as well.

"What does a taco say when he wants to meet his friends? Lettuce Meat!

Dana, she sounds so •••••••' cute!! Way to go with believing in her...more girls should have mommies like you! :)

Great job! Cute poem!

By Mrsheidi on Thursday, December 4, 2008 - 09:17 pm:

ack! it was supposed to say MODERATOR EDIT ! i can't believe red dots appeared! LOL

What the program doesn't catch, the moderators try to. Slightly altered euphemisms for profanity are also offensive.

Dana, I love your daughter's imagery. I hope she is keeping a journal or book of all of her creative thinking. You are rightly proud.

Is this the poem entered at the next step, or does she write another poem?

P.S. I hope that her winning first prize reconciles her to your making her write an entry in the first place.

By Dana on Friday, December 5, 2008 - 05:09 pm:

We went to the St Pete Museum of Fine Arts today for a field trip. It was great that they offered this to the kids. So between winning first place and being the only child in her classroom to get to go to a fieldtrip, she is very happy to have writter her poem.

Yes, Ginny, this will be the same entry in step two. I did learn today that ALL entries will go to the next step, not just 1st place. So the win was just in title for now. The school has the option to send in first place only or all. Since it was the first time our school participated they wanted to give everyone the chance to be considered again, saying that different view points bring in different wins. So hopefully she can still pull off the big win on the next step. I have no idea when the next judging is.

You can be certain I will post again when we get the results.

Yikes. Sorry, I guess?... I say that word in church. Didn't think it was offensive at all. :( To each their own I suppose...

Keep us posted, Dana!

I am at a total loss about the red dots, "moderator edited", or your last comment. And I really can't figure out what you can say in church but not on line. So if you feel like I've been offended, dont.....I'm just sitting her going HuH? :)
