Visual perception??
We have completed my 7yr old DS eye exam, he can see better than 20/20 in each eye. I posted a couple weeks ago about motivating him to better in his school work. Well progress reports came home and his grades are all A's and B's and a C in conduct, seems he likes to sharpen his pencil and play around on his way back. The teacher has moved his seat from the table with the other kids to a desk by hers and he has improved tremendously. He still brings unfinished work home along with homework. I have stopped sitting with him and only explain the directions and leave him while I cook dinner, then check his work later. Still a stuggle but we're working on it. I have taken the TV completely away from him and he can earn time back if he completes his homework correctly and there is time before bedtime and the computer for only educational games. He still continues to mix up some letters and has a horrible time with math. The eye doctor suggested testing for Visual perception but I don't know how to go about it since he goes to private school. Does anyone know what I need to do and do you think it is worth it??
Occupational therapists test for visual perception problems. Based on the mixed up letters and problems with math I would say it sounds more like a learning disability (this is what I all day at work). I would suggest a comprehensive evaluation with a learning disabilities specialist--they'll check out visual perception and the dyslexia stuff.
Pam, where do I start? Do I call the public school district for our area, or the pediatrician? The school he attends has not made any suggestions as of yet. What exactly is visual perception and is that part of dyslexia? Can you tell I'm new at this. Thanks
You can do either through the public school or the pediatrician. I think you'd be better off with the referral from the pediatrician though.
