Spit-up question
How much and about how many times a day did your babies spit up?? Raya seems to spit up a lot! I would say 5-10 times a day and quite a bit at a time. Her doctor's switched her formula to the most sensitive you can get...Nutramigen(expensive too!). Do they just grow out of it? And when?? Up until today she was only taking 4 oz. at a feeding. But for the past few days she wants to eat almost every 2 so I upped her an ounce today. I was trying to hold off until the spit up slowed down..but that may take awhile.
Maddie used to spit up ALL the time. Our ped didn't feel it was a problem, even though she was spitting up quite a bit at each feeding, regardless of size. I wondered if it was GERD, but couldn't seem to find an answer. She ate Lipil, because we tried the expensive special formulas, and got the same result. (She didn't do well nursing either) So, I guess what I'm saying is I've BTDT, but have no real answers for you. Even at age 3, Madison is still a poor eater.
BTDT with DD and it turned out she indeed had GERD (reflux). Once I *finally* convinced our ped. for a GI specialist referral and got DD on Zantac, she did much better. More info here: The GERD Word GERD Symptoms: 1: Regurgitation: spitting up frequently 2: Frequent Hiccups 3: Unexplainable crying, irritability 4: Sleep disturbance--frequent night waking 5: Arching of neck and back during or after feeding 6: Fighting during feeding 7: Sinus and nasal congestion(due to aspiration) 8: Nocturnal asthma symptoms(wheezing) 9: Recurrent coughing 10: Horseness 11: Rumination behaviors 12: Sticking fingers or fist far back in throat and gagging themself. This could be a sign of esophagitis. 13: They may appear avidly hungry for bottle or breast until their first swallows and then become very irritable and refusing to take it again. 14: Bad breath 15: Failure to thrive, losing weight. 16: Frequent choking episodes. 17: Anemia ***Children and infants with reflux may not exhibit all of these symptoms. If you suspect that your child has reflux or other problems, see your pediatrician and voice your concerns.
I've often wondered if she does have reflux. She has a lot of the symptoms you listed. Most things I've read said that they tend to outgrow it by 4 months. If she doesn't do better in the next couple of weeks I'll mention it at her 4 month check-up. Thanks for the information Trina.
It sounds like GERD to me too. My ds had that for the first few months and nothing but time really seemed to help. Luckily, it didn't stop or slow his weight gain so we just dealt with it. I hope your ped has some good answers for you.
My middle one spit up a lot. We put him on the carnation formula and he did a lot better. How much they eat really differs with the kid too. Also at nearly 4 months, maybe it is time for a bit of cereal. My middle kid was always hungry. You know if they are ready for cereal when they can actually eat it, try the spoon thing, if they are ready their little mouths and tongues show you!
Natalie spit up a lot! I personally think GERD is WAY over-diagnosed these days. Spitting up is part of being a baby! If she's not crying a lot with it or crying while lying down after eating I wouldn't worry.
Ds #1 was a spitter-upper. I never handed him to anyone without a cloth for their clothes. He continued until he was completely weened.
I remember being convinced that my oldest wasn't getting enough food cause he spit up so much! I always carried a cloth with me too. He only had fancy bibs, not clothes! LOL My mother hosted a luncheon for Marilyn Qualye (when she was the 2nd lady) and she wanted to hold my ds. I gave her the diaper rag and told her he spit up all the time, and she told me that her oldest did too!
My DS spit up A LOT but with DD, who had GERD, it was much different. She projectiled spit up and was constantly FUSSY. She would be sleeping comfortably, burp and then SCREAM. She exhibited several of the symptoms listed above: #1,3,4,5,6 and 13. Zantac worked like *MAGIC*.
UGH, Kayla's bad breath was horrible! She cried all the time until we got her diagnosed, also had a lot of the symptoms. I am glad we took her in, we got to see it on the xray tv thingy. Kayla didn't spit it up though, or well she did but would swallow it right back down. For her they gave her an RX med and I had to thicken her formula. We tried switching every formula in the beginning, did no good. We propped her up after her feedings and that helped a lot. As Kaye said, adding cereal to the formula should help. Thats what the dr told us to do. Its heck trying to get the nipple the right size though!
Good Luck. I think Hailey was my spit up baby but she didn't even do it but every now and then, and I did not like it.
