Choosing baby names-How'd you do it?
I'm having such a tough time finding boy names that my DH and I both agree on. We had an easier time agreeing on girls names. (We were thinking of using the alternate names we had chosen for my DD! Oh well....) I'd love to know your favorites! Any suggestions? I have a large list going, but my DH doesn't like but 3. We're thinking middle name of John for my Grandfather. I like all the "C" names: Colin,Cole, Chase, Carter, Connor, Cooper, Cameron, Camden. (DH doesn't like any) Jack, Ethan, William (Will), Matthew, Austen, Kyle, Aaron, Asher, Dylan, Justin, Grant, Mason SO tough!! I like a strong sounding name (Like you could see him doing anything, at a board room table) I also like a name that could be artistic as well, but not too different. I know tough call, but I think I found that with Sydney for DD.
Or middle name of William, which was my grandfather's middle name.
I like just about all the names you mentioned. Funny thing is, my dh probably wouldn't like them either. My ds's name was either going to be Joseph or Dominic. About a day after he was born i decided he looked more like a Joseph (we call him Joey now, probably Joe when he is older) I also liked Spencer, Connor, and Austin but dh didn't like those. Good luck, boys names are so hard! You want to pick a good, strong name but one that he won't get made fun of with. I hope someone else is more helpful!
If we would have had a boy we chose the name Jacob Elijah. I guess that's out the window now. Good Luck, and I hear of alot of couples having a harder time agreeing on a boy name but not a girl name...hmm
I am partial to Chase because that is my ds's name. I also liked Brodie David or William Brodie. Dh is a William. We also liked Reagan Maddox. DD would have been Zayne Garrett. So there you have it there open for the taking. Lol.
Watch out for monograms - my parents almost named me Susan Ann P--- SAP. Watch out for nicknames and names which lend themselves to unpleasant nicknames. My personal thing - choose a two syllable name because when you are hollering across the street it is easier to holler properly with a 2 or more syllable name than with a one syllable name. My youngest got really tired of hearing Scoooooooot.
If we had a boy, he would have been Jacob Brett, and we would have called him Jake. Don't think that's going to happen. :o) We didn't really agree on any other boy names, so it's a good thing we have so many girls instead of boys. LOL
We went round and round trying to come up with boys names when pregnant with ds. But I always loved the name Ashton. I grew up collecting the Ashton-Drake dolls. I didn't mention it to my husband for several months because I didn't think he'd like it. Finally I told him, and he loved it, too. We named our son Ashton James-Lee. I like Ashton Drake and Ashton Michael, also, but my hubby wanted to use his grandfather's middle name of James, and I didn't want to not include my father who is very close to my family and has done so much for us, so we used James-Lee for a middle name. I also like the name Devlin and Donavan. Almost forgot one of my favorite boy names. We actually named one of our male dogs this, and then a cousin of mine in OH named their son the same name recently. Caeden is how I spell it, though I think they spell it Caiden. I love that and would even consider it if we had another little boy (which isn't happening since I can't have more...)
If we had had a boy Benjamin was a major option for us. Also Logan and Nathan (but not Nathaniel, we didn't like that). We were just the opposite...we had the hardest time with girl names and didn't decide until the last month, where we had boy names picked out very early. Good luck
Get a Baby Name book and wear it out.
We had a much harder time with girl's names. Of course, for boys we both liked more traditional names, so we settled on "Christopher" pretty quickly. His middle name, "Lyle", was easy, too, since it is his dad's and grandpa's middle name. Ditto on the baby name book!
I am partial to Steven, Matthew, Andrew, Luke and Bryan. Other names I like are; Michael, Robert, Anthony, Eric, John, Ryan, William - mostly traditional names. My oldest and youngest both were named from dreams. I had a dream I had a baby boy and named him long before I got pregnant with my first. I told my Dh about it and we agreed to name our first son after the dream. With my youngest, I was 9 months pregnant and due to give birth any day and we still hadn't decided on a name. I was starting to get a little anxious. A week before he was born I dreamt I had him and named him, so of course, that's the name we went with! LOL
Thanks, everyone. I have a baby name book, but I was just curious to see what styles of names you liked. Thanks for the comments.
I knew this post was you! LOL! Here are boy names we considered. (I e-mailed you earlier but have since remembered more. ) Aidan Drew Justin Trey Garrett Griffin Gavin I like all the C names you listed and I also like Mason. Playing the Name Game can be so challenging. It's a tough decision. Can't wait to meet my new nephew, whatever his names turns out to be!
I like Jack and Matthew. Matthew for obvious reasons . I wish we could use Jack but close friends have already beaten us to it.
My son has my mother's maiden name as his first name. Check out some geneaology and pick a name that's been carried down a lot (that isn't too dated). Here are some names around here of new baby boys: Heath Henry Jack (more than several) Aiden Keeton One of the most popular names at my son's school is Preston.
My new nephew's name is Hugo, and we all almost died. It's grown on us over the past few months, and he's such a little sweetie that it doesn't matter. LOL Apparently it's a very common name in New York City.
I have a Robert Adam and he was easy b/c he's a "junior," but I have always loved the name Adam. DS goes by Adam b/c DH is Robert. Then we have Noah Lewis. I really loved the name Luke, but we agreed that DH got to pick the middle name and I didn't like Luke Lewis, so we compromised on Noah. The Lewis is after C.S. Lewis (better than "Clive" or "Staples", huh?). If we ever had a 3rd son, he'd be Luke Jameson. I like strong boys' names, like a Biblical root, and really am in to what the name means. For example, I used to like the name Cameron, but it means "crooked nose." No thanks. Adam means "first man" (and he was our first little man!) and Noah means "one who gives comfort" and he is the huggiest, most affectionate 8 y/o ever! I'll run through some friends' kids and therapy kids for some additional ideas: Carson, Cody, Cameron, Matthew, Andy, Thomas, Ian, Cade, Christian, Nicholas, Garrett, Levi, Drew, Zachary, Spencer, Ryan, Eric, Kensey, Dillon, Paul, William, Evan, Brock, Hayden, Holden, Hart, and Harrison.
The boy name was easy for us because we looked a the meaning of the name: Dylan...Son of the sea. Since DH is so into Surfing, fishing and swimming this was perfect. As for Taylor that was much harder. I wanted Emma or Ashley and DH couldn't decide so I gave DS a list of 4 names and let him choose. That is how Taylor got her name. Not my first choice but it fits her perfect! Good luck Eve.
Adding mine in....it is a huge choice. We went with the junior thing too. Phillip Blake and we call him Blake. Everyone said it would be a big problem in school and it wasn't. Then they said a bigger problem in college...and it hasn't been. Just adding in the the girls for fun. I was expecting one girl. The ultrasounds and amino said so. So, Leanna was a combination of my sister Ann and sister in law Lee. I love, love her middle name. English. It was Phillip's really old aunt's name and she was always different. I wish her first name had been English. Well, then we got a 2 for 1 at the hospital and we had to find another girl name in 2 days. Tough one. The first name wasn't. My best friend was Shawn in high school. Yes it was a he. He was always dear to me so... Caroline was Blake's girlfriend in kindergarten. It was pretty easy afterall. Fun post. Good luck.
We really like traditional names that come from our family. Italians have a practice of naming the first child after the paternal grandparent (usually the Grandfather). In our case, we did not do it, as my fil's name is just way too ethnic for us as is my own father's name. So... we went with a junior for my son, Randall, which is a name you don't hear much. For Helen Emelia, we named her after both grandmothers. It's a nice name and a good way to honor them. I want to be able to tell them their names mean something and connects them to a greater family history. You might want to consider barking up your family trees and looking there for names you can agree upon. Ame
I will give you some names of boys in ds's and dd's class and also the names of my nephews. Alexander Ronald, Brandon Douglas, Dylan James, Nicholas James, Cooper Evan...those are my nephews names In the kids classes there are , Jeremy, Zachary, Connor, Joey, Ethan, Matthew, Alec, Austin, Daniel, Markus, Shane, Andrew, Landon, Duncan, Seth that's all I can think of for now.
For us it was a battle for our son. I was set on Timothy James and he was set on Rolan James their last name is Stone so imagine Roaln Stone. So I compromised it is Timothy Rolan. For our girl it was always going to be Sprea Mildred and then 2 months before she was born he said what about Jade (again the last name comes into this) and I said OK so it is Jade Milrded (after my late grandma). My dad is in his glory with that middle name! I love all of the "C" names you listed they were all nice. If you can pick names you both agree on put them in a hat and let Sydney pick it out. Then she can say she had the honor of picking her little brothers name!
If you like "C" names....how about Callum? It's not used a whole lot, but I recently met a little one with this name. It's different, 2 syllables, and goes well with "John" as a middle name...
Connor is so common now... but, we liked it and since we're dog people, it means "wolf lover". I always loved "Cade", but DH didn't like that one. I liked Kestrel for a girl (it's a type of bird) but Scott thought it sounded too close to "Castor Oil"...I wouldn't have even dreamed of that. For boys...I liked Owen, Breydon, Cade, Hayden, Parker, Skyler, Collins, Harrison, Hamilton, Peyton, Harlan, Ryder, and Jalen. Just a "warning"...LOTS of names of boys start with "C" or "K" now...Kayden, Connor, Cole, Cooper are all names of a lot of boys in my playgroup.
I like the names that you mentioned. Yes it is hard to name a child because you have to take in all the considerations like one syllable names. names that rhyme with things that aren't so nice. I'm not good at picking names , so with both kids I took the easy way out. I myself believe that your first born should be named after someone in the family, so I named her Davongah after all of my male cousins and my mothers middle name and her father's and my last name hyphend. Davongah Justine Martin Then 9 years later I found out that I was having a boy. so again not too good with the names. Got to thinking I got dd name from the males in my family so drop a few letters and presto, my son was named after my daughter Justin Davon Martin I mentioned this, because since you both agreed on Syd's name maybe you can take it and come up with some veriation 4 your ds name. What ever you decide good luck.
Ame...you mentioned family names...LOL--not in my family!! My dad is James, but my brother is a junior so that was out. However, my middle name of "Jameson" comes from a combo of James and my maiden name which was Adkinson. My grandfather and his brothers were (I kid you not!): Jeffie Cecil, Hosa Bill, Codis, and Cedell with a sister named Edna. My grandmother was Mary Pearl (I like Mary) with siblings named Jeannette, Lois, Mamie, Doc, and Jimmy. My mom's side of the family is a little bit better although her given name is Edwina and she goes by her middle name. Her mom was named Essie Melba. We definitely can't stick with family names here!! DH has Manfred Clive, Bernard, and similar ones on his side, so we had to be original . I love the *idea* of family names, but our family trees just produce rotten fruit in that department.
Pam, I totally know what you mean. We've got names that are normal and names that are way out - try Ignazio, Pasqualina, Valerio, Sebastiana, Nicola (which is not so bad for a girl, but it's a boy's name!), Zina (which has got to be short for something dreadful like Vicenza), Isadoro, Eufrosina (and she chose that one when she entered the convent - go figure) ...etc. Some of the ones you mentioned are nice, Jeannette is pretty, Jeffie, I'm assuming is short for Jeffry, which is nice. Cecil is a no go, but Cecily is pretty. See, you don't have all rotten fruit. Ame
We named our son after the place he was conceived: San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. So he is called Miguel. I love his name, it is very common in Mexico and in Spain but because we are living in Britain now it doesn't really matter. Anyway i wouldn't have named him ahything else. I don't like it when Mexicans choose something "uncommon", they end up calling their children a name in English (like Jennifer) or in French (like Chantal) followed by a very common Mexican surname. Or they choose really posh names like "Camila" or "Maximiliano". Ame, i would love Cecilia for my daughter, but in Italy they would call her Ch'ech'ilia. So, it's out of the question. Dh, loves Chiara in Italian which sounds like Kiara, but in Mexico would be Ch'iara (ch as in chair!). PS. Anyway, we are almost sure he was conceived in San Miguel de Allende. The other option was the neighbourhood where i used to live in Mexico City called Tacubaya... LOL
Eve, i think Camden sounds really cool. Well Camden Town is a really cool place. Sort of the birth place of punks (I think, but i could be mistaken). How does it sound with your surname?
Maria, perche non ti piace Cecilia? Mi piace molto....Had we lived in Italy, I'd have named my son Andrea. I love that name. But here in the states, it really is a girl's name. Oh well. Chiara is beautiful.
Honestly, I can't quite remember how we came up with DD's name. We both like it but at the end I changed the spelling of her middle name to Ashlee. DH didn't know until he saw her birth certificate, lol. For a boy we picked out Connor Michael (if we have one). Connor I picked, I guess in resemblance to the Laci Peterson case. (Blame pregnancy emotions since I was pregnant at the time, lol.) Michael because it's the middle name of all the boys of both DH's and my family. Our next girl i'm kind of hooked on Emily Grace. No real reason. It just sounds cute.
We went so traditional it is crazy. Joshua David, Daniel Benjamin, Jacob Nathaniel and Zachary Samual. Would have been Rebecca Virginia or Samantha Jaye, if we had had a girl, but that SO didnt happen.
DH had a family friend, whose name was Sarah. He had lots of pleasant memories of this women, so Sarah it was. My mom is Donna Joy. I thought Sarah Joy sounded cool. It also all fit with our last name. For a boy, we had Gregory Allen picked out. I just liked those two names. We never got to use it, though! We had these two names picked out, before we even started trying to get pregnant. With Emily, we didn't start picking out a girl's name, until I was about 7 months pregnant. I was sitting at lunch at work, trying out different name combinations, with a co-worker. When I would pick Sarah up at the daycare, I kept hearing the name Emily! I decided I liked that one! Then, to pick a middle name. The one that sounded the best with Emily, was Marie. It does happen to be my middle name, too, but I really just liked how Emily Marie sounded, especially with a one-syllable last name! So, I went home from work that morning, to tell DH that name. He liked it, too, so that was the end of it. So, I have Sarah Joy and Emily Marie. Emily Grace sounds so pretty together, but wouldn't have worked for me, since our last name is just one syllable.
Ame, mi piace Cecilia ma in spagnolo (o in inglese), non in italiano perche il souno ce in italiano per me e' troppo forte. I agree, i love the name Andrea, my cousin is called Andrea and is such a gentle man that the name sounds really sweet. In Mexico too, Andrea is a girl's name, however, in the Yucatan Peninsula there are so many Italians now that Andrea is becoming a common name
We had a hard time coming up with names both my DH and I agreed on, too. Since I had pretty much chosen my oldest DD's first name, I ended up letting DH choose my youngest DD's name. He chose two he liked and so one ended up being her first and the other her middle name.
If we ever have a boy, his name will most likely be Chandler. We don't have a middle name picked out yet, and if we have a girl her name will be Chloee.
My ds had a paper due today about his name and the meaning of it. I found a neat site that lists meanings and history behind names, but also lets you search for names that mean certain things. I thought it might make interesting reading for you, Eve. Behind the Name
We came up with only one name per child, they are all traditional and named after someone in the family. Douglas Charles and Andrew Michael. Here are some other names of friends though: Jason, Casey Randal, Taylor Ryan, Cameron James, Tyler, William, Ethan, Addison, Bryan, Brandon, Eric, Antonio, Charles, Robert, Edward.
I'm biased of the name Riley because that is my ds's name. I also like the name Craig. I knew a few grwing up but I never hear the name anymore in my kid's schools. Craig William sounds nice together!
How are the name choices coming Eve?
I wish I could say we have narrowed it down. After buying 2 more baby books, I have come up with not another single name! Uggh! The only thing we have done is cross a couple off the list. For ex: Jack. I love it, but it's difficult to prounounce the 'ck' when pronouncing our last name. The 'ck' sort of gets dragged to the front of the 'Ga'. I'm still really fond of Cameron, but my DH thinks of it as a female name. Even though 9 out of 10 Cameron's are boys. Plus, I love the nickname Cam. I'm about ready to pick out of a hat!! LOL
Brandy Sue is my oldest DD's name. My DH's godmother has a grand daughter named Brandy and we always thought she she was the most cuttiest little girl. Sue is my middle name and a family middle name. We then wanted a another B name for the second girl. I had a hard time decideing on Brooke because we have a cousin named that. Brooke Elaine is her name and Elaine is also a family name.
Good luck with picking names! My mother told me to always make sure whatever name you pick will be suitable for them for their whole life.
Just name him Cam then! I have a co-worker with a boy named Nash. I thought that was cute.
I was really taken by the name Mason for this one, but dh didn't go for it. There is another spelling I liked too, Meison, which is very old. In the end I guess there is that one name that just resonates the loudest. I'm pretty clear about what it is this time, but I really need to see him first to be sure. My firstborn has a pretty unusual name, Freedom James.(James after a grandfather) At first some of the family were shocked but now everyone loves it.Everyone who hears it loves it, because it suits him. The other kids we know have unusual names too, Cash,Cole,Bianca,Mila,Willow.Axel .We actually know a Lucifer(a girl). But I'm not sure I like that one. Asher is a very nice name too.
We went through a baby book when I was 2 months pregnant. We picked a boy name and a girl name, and didn't change them once after that! My husband likes VERY traditional boy names, hence Christopher Jay. Our girl name was going to be Alyssa Marie.
Of the names you mentioned, I like Colin, Cole, Carter, Cameron, Jack, Matthew, Grant and Mason. As far as choosing names, I was stuck with my oldest son because he's named after his father (fourth generation). For my younger son, I had fun. We listed names we liked and then looked up their meanings. We had settled on Logan for awhile, but then realized that Morgan was close to that sound, it was Scottish- like his brother's name, and it had a water definition (like his brother's name). We also have a last name that starts with M so we liked the aliteration. It just seemed perfect. His middle name is my grandmother's maiden name. I like family names. My other son's middle name is the name passed down on my side of the family. Our girl names- which we will never get to use- were: Emma Carolyn and Rosemary Carolyn
