Imaginary Friends

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Imaginary Friends

Well Joe has found himself an imaginary friend...Cheesy the Porcupine. LOL I have already sat on her once (ouch). She goes home at the end of the day to go to sleep, but is always here bright & early knocking on the door to come play.
DO you just let him have his friend? Is it just a healthy expression of imagination? I have never dealt with imaginary friends & am not sure how to proceed or even if I need to.

Say, "Hello!" to 'Cheesy" for me. LOL! Perfectly normal and yes, a healthy expression of imagination. DD had one she called "Knock Knock". :)

I think that it is a healthy expression of their imagination. I would let him have it. Now...if he does something and blames it on Cheesy the Prcupine, I can't help you there. LOL. I love the name.

Thank you for the link Trina & thank you all for your input. I am still chuckling that it is a porcupine & not something soft & lovable.

Both of my girls have had some kind of imaginary friend. My youngest has three or four and has all kinds of adventures with them. They keep her from being lonely at night in bed, eat dinner with us sometimes, and she gets to be the "little mother" that her older siblings don't appreciate!

How cute and I love the name to. And a porcupine, what an imagination!

I had an imaginary dog named Barkly (from Sesame Street) when i was little. I have no idea how long Barkly was around though.

I beleive it is totally normal to have an imaginary friend.

My DD has lots of imaginary friends, the favorite being Herbie. (The Love Bug, from the movies)She just seems to talk to him and other friends when she is playing by herself. I think she just needs a buddy. LOL! I was worried at first, but her imagination just blossoms each and every day. I think it's helped her to be a lot more creative. Sometimes we tell stories at night and she makes up a whole plot line. I think it's great!:)
