**Sigh** ANOTHER ER trip! (vent)
I have been in the ER more as a parent than the rest of my life combined!! Last night I went out to get my haircut, and came home as the kids were getting their teeth brushed. Maddie heard me open the door and jerked her head around with the toothbrush in her mouth. You guessed it, she starts bleeding, the toothbrush cut her. Well, the bleeding stopped and it looked like it was just a scrap, so off to bed. 1:30 in the morning she wakes up in pain, I look with the flashlight, there is a puncture wound all the way in the back of her mouth, behind her teeth! She was also burning up so I decided to take her to the ER. She had spiked a fever, which the doctor said was unrelated, but they gave her antibiotics to prevent the injury from getting a secondary infection. Basically, since it's the mouth, they leave it alone and let it heal. Poor thing is MISERABLE, she won't eat (I've been offering soft, mild foods) she will barely drink, and she just whimpers and says "Ow". They gave me more Tylenol and Motrin, so she's taking those, but it's just going to be sore for a couple days, and I want to cry for her! Oh, and the even better news is she STILL isn't gaining weight, and has lost a couple pounds (down to 11.5 kg, about 23-24 lbs) so now I have to take her into the ped for that. Send healthy vibes please!!!!
Awww. I hope that she feels better really soon. {{{{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}}
oh sheesh, Crystal! If it's not one thing it's another. Maddie would be tiny compared to Timmy. He was at 30 pounds about 3 months ago. I'm afraid to find out where he is now. We have his 3 year old well child tomorrow. Healthy vibes that you are all done with the injuries and illnesses now.
My oldest scraped his soft palate with a Tinkertoy rod when he was about 4, and the ER told me it is excruciatingly painful - there are a whole lot of nerves there.
Kittycat at first glance i thought your post said your ds was 30 pounds at 3 months old! I was like WHOA!! LOL! That had to hurt little Maddie! Maybe she'd like something nice and cold like a popsicle or ice cream or apple sauce. I"m sure you've tried stuff like that though! I hope she feels better soon!
Oh no! Poor kiddo! Healing/healthy vibes coming your way.
Thanks everyone. Amanda, Shane is about 32lbs so he's right along the same lines as Timmy. It's my little twiggy here that is off the charts.
Crystal, I know this probably isn't the *best* thing to say right now, but be thankful the toothbrush didn't puncture and get *stuck* in the back of her throat. Poor baby!!!!! What about popsicles, or Dole Fruit & Juice bars? They are cool and yummy and would probably feel good. Same with yogurt or pudding....or cream of chicken soup, just warmed....
I have an 8mo I watch who is 14lbs. I also have an almost 5yo (in Aug) who is only 33lbs and I just finished with a 6 1/2yo who was only 35lbs. All girls, all perfectly healthy--just petite. Honestly if the child is healthy I feel doctors put too much into weight and scales. Jmho, of course. I hope her mouth is feeling better soon. Poor thing just can't get a break, can she. Hugs to you both.
Oh Crystal! What a night you had! Poor darling, i hope she feels better soon. I'll say a little prayer for your daughter. And hugs to you.
I have a dd who also didn't gain weight. What they told me was to make sure she was drinking whole milk and several glasses a day (this meant we bought 2%, whole and skim..ugh). Also keep in mind each scale is a little bit different, so don't freak too much. Good call on going to the er, you never know. My middle kid had to have stitches inside his mouth, if it is severe enough they do sew it!
Cat, I do agree to an extent, it's just the lack of growth over such a long period of time (the past 18 months). Kaye, they both drink whole, and we drink 2%, so I know what a pain that can be!! I'm going to start giving her more milk, and see what the ped says. I am glad they didn't have to do stitches (I was really worried since it was a puncture instead of surface), that must be so awful!!
Poor Maddie, I hope she is feeling better. That ppor girl has had a rough year.
A 30 pounder at 3 months, WHOA! Would I have my hands full there. Not to mention the arm muscles I'd develop carrying him around. :o) How's Maddie feeling this morning? Better I hope.
She's doing much better, thanks Amanda! She's not interested in taking her antibiotics (she'll take the Motrin, but not penicillin) but she's acting more like her happy self!
Good for her (and mom)! Timmy doesn't like to take any medicine at all. And he's a smart little bugger too, hiding it is futile.
