Croup?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Croup?
By Clarabel on Wednesday, June 1, 2005 - 12:54 pm:

Ds came down with a flu about three weeks ago and seemed to be getting better and now he keeps having bad nights, persistent cough, and a fever off and on, very clingy. I came down with it about ten days ago and my midwife told me to take Occillococinum, which is amazing to take while your pregnant, because it's totally safe and I never got the fever, just a lot of sore throat and congestion but manageable. Anyway dh is coming down with this now . I'm wondering if we keep giving it back to each other, or maybe with ds it has developed into croup or bronchitis.
I am waiting to hear back from dh right now to tell me when he will have a day off so I can make an appt. for the ped.
Does this sound like croup? There is no wheezing between coughs but he is so miserable at night and his voice sounds hoarse and he wakes up, coughs a couple times and goes back to sleep or stays up and cries.
I appreciate any input.Thanks.

correction
it's spelled:oscillococcinum.
whoops.

Croup has a DISTINCT seal-like barking sound, my little brother has had it a couple times in the past few years, mom says you cannot mistake it. If it doesn't sound like a barking seal, it's not croup, from everything I've been told. Get him to ped, better safe than sorry with respiratory illnesses.

Like Crystal said, croup sounds like nothing else. It can rip me out of a sound sleep faster than anything else. Sitting in the bathroom, with the shower running, making it nice and steamy always helped my kids, at least, once they realized they didn't have to get in the bathtub, anyway. I could always feel their bodies relaxing, as the breathing got easier.

Oh that sounds so awful, I'm sorry any one has to through that.Thank you, that's what I was wondering.I'm hoping it's just a lingering cough and congestion from the flu.
We made an appt for Friday morn. The nurse heard the cough over the phone and she didn't say croup.Still, the reoccuring fever worries me, he hasn't had it in two days.
Well we will find out.I'm such a worry wart.Just want him back to normal.

I don't think you are a worry wart, you have good reason to be concerned!! Let us know how he's doing after the appt.

The fever makes me think it might be an infection. (bronchitis/pneumonia?!) I would take him in tomorrow if you can. Friday might be a long time to wait.... Is there a reason you have to wait for your dh? Do you both work? Do you only have one car? Either way, I'd problem solve and try to figure it out....I'm extra cautious when it comes to my kids' health- but we've been through alot of illness. To me, it's better to be safe than sorry... How's he doing now?

Croup- as others have said- is something that will wake you from a dead sleep. The first time you hear it, you will think the person is dying a slow and painful death. Ds #1 gets it with EVERY cold. He's 8- so we have LOTS of experience. I had to take him to the ER for the first time for it in Dec. People were either running from us- literally- because they were so scared they would "catch" it, or they were telling stories about when so and so had the croup.

Hope he feels better soon.

Thanks, Lauram. To answer your question, yes, we have one car and tomorrow dh is working. I would love to have taken him today or tomorrow but we will have to wait until Friday. He is sleeping for the moment. He was in a good mood all evening. I will not be surprised if he wakes up coughing and crying again tonight. I almost expect it right now.Better get some sleep.

Oh , I am so glad I did that.I was pretty sure they would tell me he is fine. But you like to get their ears checked and all that. The ped said he doesn't have bronchitis or anything. He said that was more likely to happen with smokers in the house. It's just a lingering cough and congestion from the flu. I got his iron and lead levels checked which I have been meaning to do for a while. He was so good. He's napping now.

Phew! I'm so glad to hear he's ok!
