DD won't drink milk

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: DD won't drink milk
By Tonya on Tuesday, May 17, 2005 - 12:44 pm:

Jade is 15 months old and will not drink milk unless it is warmed up and in a bottle. I cut out all bottles except for bed time so I can get some milk in her but that is it. She won't take it warm in a sippy or cold in a sippy or even cold in a bottle help!!!! She loves dairy stuff like cheese and yogurt so she is getting dairy in her but what can I do about this bottle/milk issue?

If she's geting all the calcium she needs from other food sources, then don't worry about it. She doesn't really need milk.
You may need to stop the bottle at night all together.

Joe was on a bottle until he was 2 years old, because that is the only way I could get him to drink milk. Finally I just didn't give him a choice, if he didn't drink it out of a sipper he didn't get it. Of course I made sure he was getting calcium with yogurt, cheese, vitamins ect. He eventually decided the sipper was okay to drink milk out of.

I agree with Amecmom, milk is only one of many sources of protein and calcium and Vit D. As long as your dd is getting it from other sources, don't worry about it. Pick your battles.

If she enjoys the milk in her bottle, I'd just continue to give it to her that way for a while longer. 15 months is not *that* old....JMHO, but I think our society pushes kids to give up their bottles, etc. on its own timetable - what's the point? As long as you brush her teeth AFTER the bedtime bottle, before she goes to sleep for the night, I'd let her continue to have it. Maybe it's a comforting ritual for her at night time-I still drink warm milk on occasion (though not from a bottle, lol!) I breastfed my three youngest children, but my oldest had his bottle "longer" than some...I think he was a little over 2 when he gave it up completely. He is graduating from High School next year, and it doesn't seem to have hurt him at all. :)
