MY SON WHO WILL BE 8 IN MAY IS IN THE SECOND GRADE AND HAVING TROUBLE WITH HANDWRITTING;SPELLING AND WRITTEN LANGUAGE. GREAT READER AND MATH. I TOOK HIM TO THE EYE DOCTOR TO CHECK HIS EYES AND HE SAID THAT HE WOULD LIKE TO DO SOME VISION RETRAINING EXERCISES WITH HIM. HAS ANYONE HAD ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS? ALSO VERY INTERESTING FACT IS THAT THE EYE DOCTOR PICKED UP ON HIS DEVELOPMENTAL DELAYS LIKE HE DID

THANKS

I have heard of this. But don't really know specifics. What I think is it has to do with working your eye muscles so they work together and you don't have mono vision.

btw...on the net all caps is considered yelling :)

Welcome to our boards.

The little I know is that it is very contraversial. Personally, I would go with a more "mainstream" therapy option myself. Has he ever had any testing done in school?

Willsmom, several of us have previously suggested an OT and ST eval to you with many of us being educators, therapists, or parents of children with similar issues. Just wondering if your son was ever evaluated. Here's some info on vision retraining from quackwatch.org:

Optometric Visual Training

This approach is based on the idea that learning can be improved by exercises that improve coordination of the eye muscles or improve hand-eye coordination. Its proponents assume that the basic problem that leads to reading disability is some deficit in the visual system. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Ophthalmology have criticized this approach and cautioned that no eye-muscle defects can produce the learning disabilities associated with dyslexia [22]. Dyslexia is a reading disorder characterized by omissions, faulty word substitutions, and impaired comprehension. It is not due to mental retardation, lack of schooling, or brain damage.

Willsmom, please have your ds evaluated. I just had my ds evaluated last week. He has issues like poor range of motion, and lack of upper body strength. These are things that with the right guidance can be corrected. He will go to OT once a week and they will give us things to do at home. If your ds is not having trouble learning the language, but just putting it on paper, then he may have an issue that can be greatly helped by therapy. Instead of trying to diagnose him yourself, insist that the schools test him or have him tested on your own.

I was so worried about my ds, but now that I know what his specific issues are and that we are getting help for them, I feel so much better. You will feel relieved once you get to the bottom of what is causing his problems. I can't say it enough, push to have him tested.
