Fingernail Falling OFF!

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Fingernail Falling OFF!

Hi Everyone!
I noticed last night, as my 3 yo was getting ready for bed, that his pinky fingernail was falling off. THE WHOLE NAIL! I seem to remember a few weeks back that he smashed it it something. Not bad enough to bleed, but I kissed it rocked him & sent him on his way. I noticed some discoloration the past few days, but thought that it would grow out. NOT fall off! I've called his Dr. who said "If it's falling off it's falling off." Has this happened to anyone else? How did you treat it. My plan now it to KEEP it covered as long as I need to. I don't want to have to deal w/and infection! UGH
Thanks!
Karrie

It happens. Your ped is right, there isn't much you can do. If it's still attached, you may want to cover it until it falls off, to prevent it from getting snagged. If it doesn't tear off from snagging on something, you shouldn't have to worry about infection, it shouldn't be "open" anymore. It'll be sensitive for a while, and the new nail won't look normal for quite a few months, but eventually it'll be just fine. Shane had to have his toenail removed in August, and the nail has grown back enough to be clipped and covers the toe, but the nailbed is still shorter than normal. The first nail looked really weird, but it's looking much better as it grows out.

Your ped is and palm is right but WOW it just gives me the willies to think about it. GL I would totally be grossed out.

ABout a month or so ago, Timmy got his finger pinched in the car door and lost the nail. He didn't fuss too much about it. It's still growing back but unless you see it, you'd never know.

I don't think it bothers kids as much as it bothers adults. They go with the flow much easier than we do.
