Mommy Brag - Emily

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Mommy Brag - Emily
By Dawnk777 on Sunday, March 16, 2008 - 01:36 am:

Emily got a letter today, from school, to notify us that she was selected to be inducted into National Honor Society. I know that she definitely had grades, service, and character requirements, but I wondered if she had enough leadership, since she's generally so quiet and doesn't like to stick out that much, so I'm thrilled!

As far as leadership goes, I know that for key club and band, she does what is asked of her, without complaining. She attends Key Club meetings and goes to special events, and for band, she definitely practices her flute and takes that commitment very seriously, too. She is one to get schoolwork done and handed in on time.

-Is resourceful in proposing new problems, applying principles, and making suggestions
-Demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities
-Exercises influence on peers in upholding school ideals
-Contributes ideas that improve the civic life of the school
-Is able to delegate responsibilities
-Exemplifies positive attitudes
-Inspires positive behavior in others
-Demonstrates academic initiative
-Successfully holds school offices or positions of responsibility; conducts business effectively and efficiently; demonstrates reliability and dependability
-Is a leader in the classroom, at work, and in other school or community activities
-Is thoroughly dependable in any responsibility accepted
-Is willing to uphold scholarship and maintain a loyal school attitude

I found this set of criteria from a page of info, about NHS. She does demonstrate academic initiative, and is dependable in responsibilities for band or key club.

NHS Criteria

So, I'm wondering what you all think makes a kid have good leadership qualities. I don't see what she does all day, at school, but I know that teachers in the past, says she's usually helpful to other kids and tries to be respectful to other kids in class and definitely holds up her end, in a group project, etc.

We had conferences yesterday and her chemistry teacher showed me her list of assignments and tests. In the final column, she had nothing listed. The teacher was quite proud of her for that, since it meant Emily had no missing or late assignments! Also, her English teacher said she was just "darling!" LOL! Emily did a concrete poem about flowers, that when the teacher showed it on the overhead, in her other classes, other people, groaned and thought their poems "sucked!" LOL! Hers was about flowers and had petals, leaves and a stem. A concrete poem is one that looks like the subject of the poem.

So, anyway, in Emily's quiet way, she is still a leader! We are very proud of her!

Way to go, Emily!! You have every right to be proud! :)

Congratulations Emily!
That's really an achievement and I can tell how proud you are of her Dawn, as you should be.

DH and I were both in NHS. We have photos from my induction ceremony my junior year, where DH (who is one year older) is calling me up to the podium. I didn't even know him then, but my future husband is in the picture calling my name. I love that. :) He was a real smarty (valedictorian nerd!!!:)) so he got to do the induction ceremony for the juniors. I haven't thought about that in a long time, but hearing Emily's good news reminded me.

Way to go Emily!!!

That's cool, Deanna. Back in 7th grade, my future husband was in the same room as me, too, during 7th and 8th grade band! Who knew I would marry that red-headed saxophone player?

Thanks, everyone!

Cute story about your DH! I married a redhead also, who looks just like me, LOL!

Cool!

Thanks, Dana!

Dawn that's great news. My son was inducted in NHS this past November what a beautiful experience both for the parent and child. Frank is also quiet and reserved and when we asked his coaches (basketball and baseball) for letters of recommendation one of them called him a "Silent Leader" he leads my example and actions not with voice. Emily sounds just like this and wait until you read the letters, the pride and joy we felt can not be put into words. Congratulations to ALL of you.

By Dawnk777 on Monday, March 17, 2008 - 10:38 am:

We didn't need letters of recommendation, just sheets filled out for service projects, that had to be signed. When it is time for scholarship applications, then we will see those letters, though. I was thinking that she leads by quiet example, too.

By Bemerry84 on Monday, March 17, 2008 - 11:34 am:

I had thought that requirements were standard. Frank had to do 20 hours of service and two letters of recommendation to even apply and then he had to go to the interview before finding out if he was accepted. He wasn't too thrilled at first but I made him do it as it looks good on college apps and I think it will be good for him because it's something other than sports. He has already done the peer tutoring and delivered Meals on Wheels. :)

By Dawnk777 on Monday, March 17, 2008 - 12:16 pm:

She's in 2 co-cirricular activities (band and Key Club), so she only needed 10 hours of service. We really counted up 12. With only one co-cirricular, 30 hours of service would have been needed.

I think each National Honor Society group makes their own requirements.

From the school district website:

The Pantzer Chapter of the National Honor Society has a charter dated over 40 years ago. Now, as then, membership is based upon academic excellence, service, leadership, and character. Students must meet the minimum academic criteria with a 4.25 grade average. Service includes school and / or community activities, while character and leadership are rated by entire faculty. The final selection is determined by a core committee made up of faculty representatives.

CONGRATULATIONS EMILY. Not yelling at you, but with excitement. Congrats to you and your DH also.

By Bemerry84 on Monday, March 17, 2008 - 03:49 pm:

WOW a 4.25, Kuddos to Emily. :) Here you only have to have a 3.0 continually in 9th and 10th and then you get the invite. Congratulations again, I'm impressed at that GPA.

By Jelygu on Monday, March 17, 2008 - 07:51 pm:

COngrats!!!

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 - 11:00 am:

4.25 was the minimum requirement, on a weighted grade point average.

From Emily's last report card:

Non-weighted (4.0)
Quarter 2: 3.571
Cumulative: 3.810
Semester: 3.857

Weighted (6.0)
Quarter 2: 4.667
Cumulative: 4.794
Semester: 4.762
