With all the recent posts about kids OCD tendencies, I thought this article might be helpfull.

Does Your Child Have OCD?

By Lauram on Friday, March 18, 2005 - 07:10 pm:

This is actually what my son's therapist just said is going on with him- out of control OCD. She's suggested meds as our only alternative now in combo with trying to get him ready for CBT down the raod. Dh is in MAJOR denial. I suggested he meet with the therapist by himself to ask his questions and hear it from her. He's angry and I don't want him projecting that on me. I've been up for 3 days straight- have been in hours of meetings about this- and frankly am in no mood to deal with his inabilty to deal with this. Denial is so ugly.....

This is a great article - I really wish that this type of thing could have been discussed more back in the 1960's, when I was busy making my life miserable. Wait, cancel that - it's not my fault, so the OCD was making my life miserable. :)

Another medication that was not mentioned was citalopram (Celexa) - it's been used in Europe for years for that, and was just in the last few years starting to be prescribed for OCD here in the USA. I initially was prescribed Celexa for anxiety, and then a psychiatrist-friend of mine told me about its success in Europe for OCD. Hey - double duty worked for me!

It's difficult to get someone in denial over something they consider 'mental' affecting their child. If he could only be made to believe that it's not 'mental', it's actually physical....a chemical imbalance in the brain.

I wish you success in dealing with this - it's not a horrible diagnosis - it just takes education and a little patience.

Kay- We actually have it as a dx already (and many others). It's the med issue he's in denial over..... And I think the idea that this is now something we really have to confront as it is taking over at this point (as other dx's have in the past)....

Hopefully your dh will come to realize that the medication will do your child SO much good. How nice to be able to live a 'normal' life, and not get so tied up with the stumbling blocks of OCD.

Good luck.
