Kid allergies...
My dd seems to be suffering from alergies- pollen and the like! My husband is a sufferer as well- so I guess thats where it is coming from! Have any of oyu been through this? She is so miserable because it is hard to breath through her mouth. All the over the counter remedies are for 2 years and up -she is 16 mos. Does anyone have any great remedies??? I am really trying to find something I could do for her at night as she is having a hard time getting to sleep- mostly frustrated with the majorly stuffed up nose!!! TIA!
I meant to say hard to breathe through her nose! Duh...LOL
Have you called your doctor or has she been seen by an allergist? I can't remember the age recommendations but Benadryl might be an OTC option. I've also heard of toddlers on Zyrtec, which is a prescribed allergy med. Another consideration would be to get a HEPA air cleaner for her bedroom. DS has one and it has been a BIG help with his asthma.
Timmy was a little bit older, I think around two, so the first recommendation is to check with your pediatrician. When we did, they had us give him 1/2 of an over the counter Claritin. In a couple of days, it works like a charm. We don't use it all the time but when I see him starting to have problems, it does seem to help.
Ditto Trina. All of mine had/have airborne allergies, 2 have asthma.
My son was on Zyrtec for a little while when he was just over a year old. It worked nicely. Then, luckily, he showed no symptoms of seasonal allergies again. Bendryl is fine also, check with your doc for the correct dosage. Also, just a simple decongestant. Also, try nasal saline (Little Noses) and a syringe. It may help keep her nose clear. Don't do it too often, though, because it could irritate her nose and make the stuffiness worse. Good luck, Ame
Our ped recommended children's benadryl in the liquid. There's a dosing chart so your doc can give you that, too. My dd is 8mths and takes it when she gets rashes around her mouth from teething.
Thanks- we have an appt today at 1 so hopefully she can give me some ideas! I have been trying the saline thing- she is none too happy about that! LOL It doesn't seem to work for more than 30 seconds. She threw up this morning- but it was definetely mucus. She is fine otherwise, just frustrated. She was up from 4-6:30 am then I got her to sleep for an hour or so! Needless to say we are both tired!!
When my DD has a cold (stuffy nose difficult breathing through nose) I put a cool air humidifier in her room, that helps a lot. If you still have heat on in your place, another option is to put a pan of water on the heat vent (I am not sure if your dd can get out of bed, in which case not a good idea). Also, try putting something under the mattress at the head of her bed so her head is a little elevated, just some folded towels works well.
The saline is just a moisturizer...it helps moisten the stuff in the nose so you can pull it out or blow it out. It doesn't stop the congestion.
They told us to use benadryl- I just gave her some before bed and we shall see! Keep your fingers crossed for me-I could sure use some sleep! Thanks for the input!
