How long do I give milk?
DS will be 12 months at the end of this month. We are giving him three 9 oz bottles of milk per day. One at 10 am, one at 2 pm and one at 7 pm. I don't want to give DS his milk at meal times because I want to ensure he gets enough food and enough milk. He still seems to want his bottles at the times mentioned. I asked the doctor today and got a really vague answer. He said 5 dairy servings per day. How long did you give your little ones bottles? When should I stop and just incorporate into meals?
There is a post a little ways down titled when did you wean from bottles or something like that. Lots of responses there!!
Sorry I guess I should revise my question. DS is drinking milk from a sippy cup, 9 oz 3 times a day. How long do I continue to give him so much milk each day? Is 9 oz. 3 times a day too much, should I just give him a glass of milk with his meals?
I would say as long as he is eating good, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Since he is about 12 months, I would assume that you will be dropping the bottle with in the next couple of months anyway. Then I would worry about the amount of milk servings a day to make sure he gets enough.
Is there a such a thing as "Too Much Milk?" Rylee drinks it 3 times a day still, with every meal. Sometimes she has four glasses a day. Is that too much? She loves milk.
Heck, my teenagers drink at least 6 huges glasses a day!! One thing I did when they were little was no milk till they finished their meal to ensure that they ate some food.
Dr didn't want my son to have more than 32 oz. of milk a day after 2 year old. I've heard that if they have to much it can cause an iron deficiantcy. This is particularly true if they aren't big eaters & are filling up on milk. It happened to a friends ds & another friend has a is a physician's assistant & told me the same thing. My 9 year old & 3 year old would live on milk if I let them! The 12 year old won't touch it! He's like his mom!
I give it to her after she eats, because I don't want her filling up on it. She drinks about half of a sippie cup full.
Toddlers aged 1 year through 2 years do not need as much milk/dairy as one would think. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that 16 ounces of whole milk per day is all your toddler will need. Calcium for Infants & Toddlers (AAP) http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/dairylink.htm Rayanne- DD loves milk as well. She actually prefers it over juice and most days she gets about 20 ounces of milk, about 8-10 ounces of juice and a few cups of water. She drinks a lot of fluids and always has.
