Have you ever used store brand formula?
I went to store to purchase my first can of Soy formula. OMG! It was $13 for a regular size can. While getting other things, there was a sale rack that included a HUGE HUGE can of Soy formula...a store brand (Albertsons). It was on sale for 7.49. what a deal. I figured how bad could it be? I mean they have to meet certain criterian, right? What have your experiences been?
We were using Costco formula but Connor kept spitting up. So, we've used Infamil (insert *CHOKE* here) and ever since then, we've been in debt! LOL Just kidding...but seriously, it can be so expensive. It's just that the store brand wasn't sitting well in his tummy. Infamil tends to mix well with the water too.
Formula is held to very strict standards, so the store brand is of equal quality to the big name brands. I was on WIC with the kids, but I often had to buy extra cans, we went through about 21 cans (I know, OMG that's a lot of formula!), and only received 18 a month. I bought store brands a couple times then. The kids never noticed the difference.
I wanted to use the Cost-Co formula so I asked my Pediatrition what she thought about it. She said to read the lable and make sure it compares to the "name" brand we use. Make sure it has the correct amount of DHA and ARA. We use Enfamil and when I compared it to the Cost-Co I didnt see much of a differance but I just felt better buying the Enfamil because DS used it. I nursed DD until she was 6 1/2 months old so I figured, I will pay for the formula that my pediatrition reccomends since I only need to use it until she is 12 months then I will start her on Cow's milk. I registered online with Enfamil and I get coupons in the mail all the time and that really helps with the cost of buying it.
I pretty much only bought regular-brand formula. I can't remember if a store-brand was available back then.
Timmy was bounced around to so many different types of formula that I lost count. My pediatrician told me the same as Andi's to check the labels but if he was happy, she was happy. I never had trouble with him on any of the formulas. It was not odd for him to have up to 3 different brands in one day depending on where we were when he was hungry.
I know! I wish I could use the Costco brand. We have to use Enfamil Nutramigen and its $25.00 a can!!! Katie is 8 months old, so soon we will save money when she can go to regular milk in a few months.
I have used the store brand. When the guys were really little it seemed they liked one brand and would spit up anything else. One of them had to have enfamil, one good start, and I cant remember back any further . When they got closer to weaning off breast and formula anything would do. You can also look on ebay for coupons for your formula, that helps on the price too.
DD had Similac Advance. We never used store brands. But as a product that has to be evaluated by the FDA, most of the ingredients have to be the same (aka, the active ingredients). The only ingredients they can change are the inactive ones, the "filler" ingredients. So, as long as there are no reactions to the inactive ingredients that may differ from a store brand can, I dont see why it wouldn't be as good.
DS seems to be doing well on it. Glad I went ahead and purchased it.
We tried everything for my son about 3 years ago. Out of desparation, I tried the Walmart brand. Now I hate going into Walmart for any reason, but with a baby it's a necessary evil unless you're rich. He did super well on the Parents' Choice. When I told my Ped. he was surprised until he saw that it was made by Wyeth Labs. He'ed been reccomending a similar formuls under a different name until he thought they stopped making it. A note on the DHA ARA, formula with it gave her digestive trouble. Ame
