Are your dressers anchored to the wall?

My 8 yr old neice apparently opened too many dresser drawers the other day and the whole thing fell over. Luckily she noticed what was happening and got out of the way before it landed on her. I know that a younger child probably wouldn't have thought as fast as my neice and wouldn't have gotten out of the way.

If your dressers are not sturdy, please look into anchoring them to the wall. They sell something just for this purpose at Onestepahead.com. I'm sure they sell something like this at babiesrus too.

To be honest, mine aren't anchored to the wall. But I am thinking of getting the wall anchors for my dd's tall dresser.

Furniture Bracket

I never had to use these because my kids dressers were in their closets when they were little. Otherwise I had clothes scattered everywhere! lol Great reminder, Patti. :)

That same exact thing happened to me when I was a tot, so it really does happen a lot folks. Fortunately I wasn't hurt, just pretty scared.

Thanks for the reminder.

This happened to me as a child too. Aparently I was around three, was using the drawers as steps to the top (they kept medicine on top), it toppled over and I fell completly inside a drawer, the dresser landed against the bed which wedged me in. My mom was just barely strong enough to get it back up, she was so relieved that I was okay, and then so mad...lol

Oprah had a show about a year ago on child tragedies and how to prevent them.
One of her stories was of a toddler opening the oven lid and standing on it. It fell over and collapsed on his chest resulting in death. They strongly suggested mounting a free-standing oven with the brackets.
Also, a hazard you would never think of...
I am a Trauma nurse and last year we had a 3 year old die from head/face injuries after pulling over a cement bird bath in his yard.
So scary!

I have been having trouble with Hailey opening the oven door lately, any suggestions??? Can you buy locks for the oven?

By Palmbchprincess on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 11:47 pm:

My mom told me when I was pregnant it isn't worth buying a dresser for children. They can hurt themselves, and often break the drawers anyway. We use closet organizers for all of the kids' clothes. As for oven latches, you can buy those, but I've not found any that are very effective.

Yes Candis, My sister's twins have started opening the oven door. She got a oven lock. I think you can get them at babies r us. OR onestepahead.com.

I wonder how your sister likes it, Patti, and if she has the lock that locks on the side or in the front?

By Bellajoe on Tuesday, March 1, 2005 - 03:28 pm:

I will ask her next time I talk to her.

Candis, My sister says she has the kind that locks in front. I guess you just slide it over or maybe push a button and slide it to unlock it. Her 1 yr old twins have not figured out how to work that yet, so yes i guess she does like it. It does the job.
Her dh either got it at babies r us or Home Depot. She is not sure.
