I'm so nervous....
I went over to a friend's house yesterday during a walk with my DS (had him in a backpack) and today she called me to say that her son has the flu. ACK! We only spent a half hour there and her son was asleep during our visit. But, I'm SO nervous. She felt terrible about it, but I'm glad she called me today to let me know. I wasn't allowed to get Connor a flu shot before 6 months though and the pediatric office just laughed when I asked for one recently. (That's another story in and of itself. I'm not satisfied AT ALL with our pediatric center.) Is there anything I can do? He's not showing any symptoms but he has sneezed more than normal. The doctor called us back and said there's not much we could do. Just frustrated and paranoid...
I'm not real sure. I'd just watch him closely. Your son may be too young for this, but I know they sell liquid vitamin C over the counter. Check with your pharmacy. Other than that, I would spray everything with lysol and hope for the best. I wasn't able to get my dd a flu shot either, but so far so good. Cross your fingers!
Heidi, We had a similar situation just recently. My brother-in-law showed up at our house with a violent stomach flu. I was so angry, ds was only 9 months old and flu shot or not I don't think he would have been protected from this flu bug. Anyway, he stayed at our house and my husband (who had a flu shot) ended up with the flu - I quarantined him in the basement - poor hubby, but no way was I going to put ds in danger of the stomach flu at such a young age if I could help it. I bleached and washed the whole house from top to bottom and my hands were raw from washing them. I sprayed the house with so much lysol I set the carbon minoxide detectors off. Then I had to have the windows open in middle of winter to air everything out. I guess as new moms we sometimes get really afraid of things we can't control. Neither myself or ds got the flu thankfully, but I know how scared you are, just keep an eye on him and if he gets the flu get him into the doctor right away. Take care we will be thinking of you. Last point however, I spent a lot of time and engery worried about something that never happened.
Hoping and praying the flu bugs pass you by ... Ame
The flu shot doesn't protect you from the stomach flu. That is something completely different. Influenza is a respiratory disease marked by a high fever and extreme malaise. While it can cause vomiting and diarrhea in children, it still is a different thing from the stomach flu. Still, BIL shouldn't have come to your house, if he was throwing up! (how could he even manage to leave his house?) From the CDC website: The Myth of the "Stomach Flu" Many people use the term "stomach flu" to describe illnesses with nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. These symptoms can be caused by many different viruses, bacteria, or even parasites. While vomiting, diarrhea, and being nauseous or "sick to your stomach" can sometimes be related to the flu – particularly in children – these problems are rarely the main symptoms of influenza. The flu is a respiratory disease and not a stomach or intestinal disease.
