Diapering a baby boy ???????

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Diapering a baby boy ???????
By Dana on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 11:40 am:

Okay, I have a FULL load of laundry already (we've been home since Friday) because he has the power to pee right out of his diaper without wetting the diaper.

I've got the waist as tight as I can w/ the umbillical cord being there. The legs are well fitting. Of course the diaper is always bigger than the newborn, but my goodness! This happened only one time w/ DD.

Which way do you point that little thing that is causing all the trouble? The first time it happened it was wet all over his belly, I am guessing it must have been pointing up....I never took the time to look when dressing. Since then, I always look and try to place it facing down. But still, I wake to a wet baby back and a dry diaper.

Thanks for the advice! :)

A "boy!"...what was God thinking? LOL.

By My2cuties on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 11:55 am:

I thought you pointed it down...good thing I am having another girl, I would be at a loss of ideas too.

By Bellajoe on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 11:59 am:

Maybe you shoulds switch diaper brands.

I have a boy. We always pointed his little part down. We used Pampers and never had that problem....not often anyway.

By Cat on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 12:22 pm:

Oh, Dana. I'm not laughing AT you, I'm laughing WITH you! rofl Yes, point it down. Also, what brand diapers are you using? We ended up using Luvs with both our boys. The store brand ones leaked almost all the time. Also, make sure the elastic in the legs is folded in, not out. kwim??? I've had a couple daycare kiddos I've had to do that with or I'd have a huge mess to clean up! Have you been "christened" yet??? lol Robin would pee as soon as the cold air would hit him when we'd change his diapers. I learned to undo the tabs, pull the diaper back and then put it back over his very quickly. Otherwise I'd get a shower. Yuck! The joys of boys. :)

How's everything else going? How are YOU? Hugs!

By Karefl on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 01:02 pm:

I'm a mother of THREE boys! I agree with the others. Check you brand of diapers. With my last one Pampers were the ONLY ones that didn't leak! For my first son I was able to use Huggies, but found that by #3 that they had changed something & I couldn't stand them! Piont "it" down & be ready to flip that new diaper into place AS soon as you move the used one!

By Sunny on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 01:28 pm:

Yes, always point the penis down when putting on the diaper, but remember, little boys can get erections and all your best efforts may be in vain. :)

Oh, and just to reiterate what Cat said, make sure you keep their penis covered when changing their diapers, or else you may get "christened"! Don't worry if you do, though, I think it happens to all of us! LOL

By Palmbchprincess on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 02:57 pm:

I had to use preemie diapers for the first month, but I think we always pointed it up with Shane. I never had too much of a problem with leaks, but we did get "christened" a couple times. I like Luvs diapers, Pampers always felt greasy to me, and Huggies never fit well. Oh, and as far as covering the penis during changes, they actually have little cloth teepees that you can use, but why bother?? Strange!

By Reds9298 on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 03:02 pm:

I agree that you should check your diaper brand. I have always had massive leaks with Huggies, and I have a girl. My best luck is with Luvs (cheaper than pampers) but pampers won't let you down either! I always pointed it down when diapering my nephews!

By Heaventree on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 03:06 pm:

I really liked Huggies in the beginning because they didn't smell. I find that Pampers have a chemical smell, however, once ds was circumsized we had to switch to Pampers they were the only ones that didn't leak.

By Kittycat_26 on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 03:13 pm:

We used preemie diapers with Timmy for the first couple of weeks and even they swamped him. I wouldn't have known a leak if it did happen since there was so much extra diaper there to catch it.

I've never had luck with generic diapers but have stuck with White Cloud and seem to be doing well.

Don't worry, the leaks will stop after you figure out your son's fix for this.

By Amecmom on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 04:58 pm:

Point it down. Fold the diaper top in. I always used the pampers swaddlers or cruisers or the Huggies overnights.

I also bought a bunch of bar towels (like 20 or so in a pack at Walmart) I used to put a towel over his little fireman until I was ready to close him up.

Remember, point it down and fold the top of the diaper in.

thanks all! I have been using samples i have. Several are huggies and the others are white cloud (which i had never heard of). a few were pampers and i liked those.

i haven't been to the store yet. just not feeling up to it for now.

luvs were my favs w/ dd.

so far no surprise squirts. i was warned a long time ago that and the info stayed with me :)

By Kernkate on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 06:38 pm:

All good advice. With 3 boys I have been christened more then once:) As far as leaks I always used Luvs and never had a problem. My oldest DS is 19 and youngest is 10, and I don't remember ever pointing it down...LOL.:)

By Kernkate on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 06:40 pm:

Could be a memory lapse with the point down thing!!!LOL

By Coopaveryben on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 06:41 pm:

I didn't have a chance to read everyone's post and perhaps someone suggested this. I had the same problem with all three of my boys and they were all average in weight but the diapers were too big. I bought some premie diapers and they worked Great! I used them for about 2 weeks and then they outgrew them.

By Colette on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 06:51 pm:

Point it down and keep a cloth diaper nearby to throw over him if you need to open the wipes or something. Otherwise you will be christened.

By Kim on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 08:26 pm:

They also have diapers with a portion cut out for the umbilical cord area. Or do all newborn brands have this now??? This really helped me with Kayla.

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, February 8, 2005 - 12:21 am:

Ugh, I hated the store-brand diapers. Although, I used the main three diapers and don't recall having a leaking problem with any of them specifically. Just the leaking problem caused by waiting too long sometimes! LOL! (glad diapers are a distant memory!)

By Amyk on Tuesday, February 8, 2005 - 09:08 am:

In the meantime, you can get waterproof lap pads - made by Carter's I think - at Babies R Us - they are big waterproof squares that you can put under baby...

My ds is 17mo and I had the same problem! It does get better - congrats on your new arrival!!!
