Hand, Mouth, and Foot Virus

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Archive January-June 2005: Hand, Mouth, and Foot Virus

Does anyone know what this is? Supposedly dd has this, I'm not sure if I agree with the doctor. It all started last month when one of her classmates got chicken pox. She started breaking out, but I wasn't sure if it was chicken pox or her exzema. So, I took her in and the doctor said it wasn't chicken pox. Great, I thought. Well, a few days later, she had what I thought was a really bad diaper rash. I figured it was because my grandmother had been giving her straight orange juice. I kept her off of the juice for a few days and it went away. Well, then it came back--still looking like a diaper rash. I tried desitin and corn starch but it wouldn't go away. I tried putting her exzema medicine on it--nothing. I even tried benadryl, thinking it may be an allergic reaction to something--nothing. I then tried anti fungal medicine in case it was a yeast infection. Nothing worked. Then it spread to the lower part of her stomach and to her bottom and it kind of started scabbing because of her itching it. So, I took her to the doctor and he said it was hand, mouth, and foot virus and that there's nothing you can do. It will just go away. Well, first of all, it's in her diaper region, not her hand, mouth, and foot; and second it's been over a month. How long does this stuff last. She's just miserable. It bothers her when she takes a bath, and it itches like crazy. I feel so sorry for her. I don't know what to do. If it's not any better by Friday, I'm taking her back. This is ridiculous. Sorry for ranting! Any advice would be great! Thanks.

My niece is going through the same thing right now. The rash is in her diaper area, just like your daughter. The rash has been there for about two weeks and the doctor told my SIL the exact same thing you were told. SIL also questions the diagnosis for the same reason.

Listening to the two of you, it sounds like the diagnosis is correct! Good luck...I hope she is better soon! (And I am sorry I have no advice to offer!)

I heard they had it at a gymborree type place once. From not wearing socks in places....

It is a common virus. My DD had it as a toddler and it was NOT fun. Fever, rash, fussiness, etc. for almost a week before she got better.

CDC - Hand Foot Mouth Disease

BabyCenter.com - Hand Foot Mouth Disease

Hope your DD is feeling better soon!

Thanks for the info, Trina. The thing is she hasn't had a fever or anything in her mouth. She did have a spot on her hand, but other than that, it's just in the diaper area. Both the links you posted say that it's characterized with fever and blisters in the mouth.

When my dd had it, she didn't have it in her mouth, but all down her legs and then on her hands. I agree it doesn't sound quite right. My son age 9 had the oddest rash a few months ago. Same type thing, it looked like chicken pox, but wasn't. I posted here, turns out is was a type of hives. Maybe your dd is having an allergic reaction to something. This would also make her cranky. Look at her diet and see if you can figure out what new she may of started.

A lot of the daycare kids get this. Some of them don't get it very bad on the hands and feet or even the mouth. Some of them do get it worse in the diaper area. Plus some of the parents didn't notice fever. The scabbing sounds like it for sure. It sounds like it to me too.

Try using Nupercainal. I was recommended this when Kayla was one and had chicken pox really really bad especially in her diaper area, front to back. It is usually in the drug store near the hemrrhoid cremes and cortaid and stuff. It is not only an antiseptic but also an alalgesic and can be used for scrapes, burns and cuts also. I use it for everything still and it help the pain immediately, plus it creates a nice ointment barrier as far a diaper rash goes. A little goes a long way. Hope she feels better soon.

Ds #1 had this last spring. It is VERY painful. It takes about 10 days to resolve. I'd try Motrin for the pain. My son's dr had him gargle Benadryl too- he called it poor man's anticeptic. She's probably too young to do that though. It's also highly contagious so keep her away from other kids for several days until the blisters disappear.

Well, it was clearing up, but then last night it flared up again. :( I'm really leaning toward taking her back to the doctor. It doesn't seem to be painful, just itchy. She hasn't had a fever. She's been actually pretty cheerful. It's been like 3 or 4 weeks now. Something is just not right.

My 9 month old DGD just got over this.I think she had it for at least 2 weeks.I think she pretty much just had to let it run it's course.Try putting some baking soda in the babie's bath water .That should relieve the itching.

I took her to another doctor on Friday because it still hadn't gotten any better, and he said that it was a mix between a yeast infection and regular diaper rash, along with her ezcema. (Poor baby!!!) He prescribed some yellow creme stuff and it's doing much better now. He said it would probably take at least a week to get 100% better though.

This rash thing is still here!!!!!!! I think these doctors slept through medical school! She's been to three different doctors since Dec. and I've gotten 3 different diagnoses--neither which is right.

This rash-which is more like a bunch of dots in her diaper region--has been there since December. It'll go away for a day or so, but then it's back. It doesn't seem to really bother her too much. She says it itches.

I can't afford to take her to the doctor every two weeks. Doctors are not cheap, and they don't care if they're wrong or not, they'll still charge you!!!!!

I'm sooooooooooo irritated. Sorry--just wanted to vent!

Have you changed anything? Diapers, wipes, creams, soaps, diet etc...? Maybe it could be allergy related?

By Kaleighsmommy on Thursday, February 17, 2005 - 06:58 pm:

No, I haven't. I though of that too. Everything is the same.
